NEW YORK, November 15, 2002 (LifeSiteNews.com) – WAL-MART in the U.S. has responded to a campaign for decency launched by the American Decency Association (ADA).  The ADA campaign urged customers to confront WAL-MART on its practice of having offensive, near-pornographic magazines lining the checkout aisles.

WAL-MART received thousands of ADA initiated complaints about their “careless, insensitivity in the sale and placement of numbers of erotic magazines Cosmopolitan, Glamour, and others featuring sexual imagery and eroticized verbiage and, in addition, being so insensitive as to stick it before our noses at the checkout counters.”

WAL-MART wrote the ADA to say that “Earlier this year, we began establishing a limited number of checkout lanes in our stores that do not feature the following magazines: Cosmo, Glamour, Vogue, and Redbook. More than 90 percent of our stores nationwide now include at least two of these checkouts, and we expect 100 percent of our stores to have at least two or more of these checkouts in the near future.” The letter noted that “Our actions here are in direct response to similar feedback we have received on this issue from others, as well as direct feedback from our customers.” Unfortunately, the giant chain is still resisting the removal of the offensive magazines from all of its checkouts.  ADA is encouraged by the “small but positive step” and has encouraged supporters to continue the positive pressure on the retail giant.  CONTACT WAL-MART— WALMART HEADQUARTERS Corporate Offices Lee Scott, President [email protected]   Wal-Mart 702 SW 8th Street Bentonville, AR 72716-0705 PHONE: (479) 277-3195 FAX: (479) 273-1970 Toll Free: 1-800-WAL-Mart COMPLAINT FORM:  https://www.walmartstores.com/wmstore/wmstores/HomePage.jsp?template=OnlineForm.jsp
