(LifeSiteNews) — Cardinals Burke and Müller are among those Christian leaders who are praising superstar Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ before its return to theaters nationwide September 10-17.

Cardinal Burke and other Christian leaders are remembering what it was like to see The Passion of the Christ on screen for the first time as they prepare the way for Gibson’s highly anticipated The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One. His most ambitious filmmaking achievement—and the biggest faith film ever brought to the screen—the epic arrives exclusively in theatres May 6, 2027. The rerelease of The Passion of the Christ on September 10-17 invites audiences to rediscover the film as an unforgettable, communal cinematic event before they return to theatres for the next film in 2027.

“This work is truly monumental, a story which touched profoundly the hearts of many,” said the Cardinal.

“The Passion of the Christ film impacted me powerfully for the first time I saw it over 20 years ago,” said Archbishop Paul Coakley, President, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. “But to see it again on the big screen, I think, will have an impact on today’s viewers that maybe haven’t seen it. It’s a powerful portrayal of the Lord’s Passion and death, and I think it’s going to be as powerful in its rerelease as it was when it was first released in 2004.”

“I really felt that I had witnessed the Crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ,” said Rev. Franklin Graham, Samaritan’s Purse. “It ignited an interest worldwide in the Word of God.”

“The Passion is more than a film,” said Pastor Samuel Rodriguez, New Season Church and President, National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference (NHCLC). “There are movies that you watch and there are movies that you experience. This is a moment for the Church of Jesus Christ to come together as one.”

Many of today’s young Christians have yet to experience The Passion of the Christ on the big screen which is a powerful reminder of the love of God exhibited in Jesus’ Passion and Death.

The president of Franciscan University of Steubenville shares a reflection that points to the witness of Saint Francis.

“Saint Francis believed that if we could see what God has done for us, that would move our hearts,” said Fr. Dave Pivonka, TOR, president of Franciscan University of Steubenville. “As we prepare for Mel Gibson’s next great movie, which I’m sure will be amazing, The Resurrection… I encourage you, your community, and your family to be able to once again experience the movie—the beauty that is The Passion of the Christ.”

For this special theatrical presentation, The Passion of the Christ has been meticulously remastered from the original camera negative in 4K resolution. The film features a new color pass supervised by original Academy Award®-nominated cinematographer Caleb Deschanel, along with a Dolby Atmos audio mix reviewed and approved by Mel Gibson.

Audiences attending the rerelease of The Passion of the Christ will see an exclusive, behind-the-scenes sneak peek of The Resurrection of the Christ, the highly anticipated new film, which tells the story of Christ’s victory over death after His greatest sacrifice—a moment that forever changed the course of humanity and continues one of history’s most consequential and enduring stories.
