(LifeSiteNews) — On this week’s episode of The Van Maren Show, Jonathon discusses the many crises facing the Western world and ponders the question, “What are Western values, exactly?”

Jonathon begins the show by diving into some of the existential crises we see in our modern Western world. One of these is the total demographic collapse in our society, noting that the birth rate has plummeted in Canada and across all Western countries.

Jonathon emphasizes that with these significantly lower populations, there are fewer citizens to pay into the system, which leads to the dysfunction of these Western nations. This, in turn, leads to different responses by the regimes, one of which is euthanasia, as discussed in last week’s episode with Alex Schadenberg.

“What you see is that increasingly people who are vulnerable, people who are very sick, people who are disabled, and, sure, people who are costing a lot of money to the system are encouraged to get euthanized.” He adds that people like Roger Foley had been offered euthanasia after saying they felt suicidal, underscoring that the regime recognizes that it’s cheaper to euthanize than to find beds for the disabled or those with chronic or mental illnesses.

“The reality of a society in which the population has essentially given up on its own future is that the future that was supposed to arrive and take care of the elderly people is not taking place. So the basic and longstanding human contract, which is [that] your parents take care of you while you’re young and you take care of them while they’re old, has broken irreparably apart,” Jonathon says.

“And so as a result, the kind of pernicious euthanasia regime we see in Canada is going to become increasingly common and, in some ways, is an inevitable result of our collective decision to give up on there being a future to begin with.”

Jonathon then underscores that we’ve created a problem on both ends of the candle by using birth control and abortion to avoid having children and throwing older people away by euthanizing them. Now we are told we need to import the populations we declined to have ourselves.

“And so for decades now, almost every major Western country with a handful of exceptions has been importing massive populations from other countries. Huge numbers of people are being brought from other countries with profoundly different cultures, and this, of course, has resulted in those people bringing their interests with them. In many instances their loyalties lie elsewhere, and they’ve made this very clear,” he says.

A bit later in the episode, Jonathon begins to ponder the question that he says conservatives have to grapple with when considering solutions to the current crises the West faces: “What are Western values, exactly?” Defining Western values as our collective Christian civilizational inheritance, Jonathon contrasted this with the current definition of Western leaders.

“[W]hen Joe Biden, or Kamala Harris, or Justin Trudeau, or U.K. PM Keir Starmer talk about ‘our values,’ they’re not talking about our collective Christian civilizational inheritance. Those guys are talking about abortion-on-demand, Pride Month, and all the pelvic privileges of the sexual revolution,” he says.

“So it’s true that many immigrants to the West have not assimilated to Western values, but it is also true that when they arrive in the West, it’s primarily hedonistic materialism that’s on offer for them.”
