WINNIPEG, Feb 6, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Archbishop V. James Weisgerber of Winnipeg has written all the priests in his diocese urging them to “raise up the Gospel value of life” and oppose public funding of the Morgentaler abortuary in the province. In the letter dated Feb. 2, the archbishop asked pastors and parishioners to write and petition the provincial Health Minister Dave Chomiak, asking him not to go ahead with plans to fund the private abortuary.

The Archdiocese informed LifeSite that the bishop also wrote Minister Comiak on Feb 1. In his letter the bishop wrote “as a Church leader and a taxpayer” and reminded the Minister that “many citizens of Manitoba have a deep, principled opposition to abortion.” He says, “Many of these citizens object strongly to the use of their tax dollars to fund a procedure which they deem to be morally offensive.”
