WINNIPEG, Mar 12 (LSN) – New reports on the story of Winnipeg Child and Family Services (CFS) flying a 16-year-old girl to Toronto for an abortion on Monday despite the vehement objections of her other, indicate the agency’s role in the affair is even more objectionable than it first appeared to be. When the mother suspected last week that workers in the CFS agency were pressuring her daughter into procuring an abortion, the mother terminated the voluntary agreement that placed her daughter in temporary custody of the CFS. When the agency learned that the mother was against the abortion and now asserting her custody, the agency immediately apprehended the teenager— the first step in wresting legal custody of the girl away from her mother. The mother's lawyer Doug Mayer noted that in order to apprehend a child, the agency must believe she is in need of protection from her mother. Thus the agency was deeming it necessary to “protect” the child from her mother's counsel to allow the baby to live. Further, last Friday CFS filed a court motion to permit the agency to procure an abortion for the girl, who is 19 weeks pregnant. The case was adjourned, but on Monday CFS withdrew its motion and flew the girl to Toronto for an abortion, indicating that the court proceeding was unnecessary because the child at 16 is lawfully entitled to make her own health decisions. The mother and stepfather, who are opposed to abortion, contend that CFS pressured their daughter into an abortion, telling her the baby would be taken away since she could not raise it. They say that two weeks ago she wanted to have the baby and still remains undecided. Dave Waters, eastern director of CFS, conceded that the agency might tell a pregnant teen her child could be apprehended at birth if she were unable properly to care for it. The girl’s mother is considering a lawsuit against CFS, saying it interfered with her rights as a parent and has asked a Toronto pro-life group to visit her daughter.
