WATERLOO, ON, November 26, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Environment Minister Elizabeth Witmer, who declared her candidacy for Leader of the Ontario Tories Friday repeated her pro-“choice” stand for reporters. Last week, she told the press she supported abortion. After being questioned on the issue by the media Witmer said, “I believe it is up to each individual, and I respect the decision that each woman will make in this regard.”
Her apparent disregard for the life of the unborn marks a massive flip-flop for the 55 year old MP. Campaign Life Coalition records on Witmer indicate that in response to a pro-life questionnaire in 1995, Witmer believed life begins at conception, and was against abortion on demand, and also against tax funding of abortion clinics. In a letter written in February, 1994, she wrote, “I do not support the policies of the NDP Government with regard to increasing access to abortion services.” Witmer’s recent statements to the media identifying herself as supporting abortion, were a disappointment to the pro-life movement.
