OTTAWA, June 8 (LifeSiteNews.com) – LifeSite News has obtained a copy of a letter written by canon lawyer Monsignor Vincent Foy of Toronto regarding Catholic support for the March for Women.  Reports have come in indicating that various parish-level Catholic Women’s League (CWL)  groups have been rejecting participation in the march and some have even demanded the resignation of the CWL national executive over the fiasco.

Msgr. Foy’s letter, submitted to Canada’s Apostolic Nuncio, points out in stark clarity the objections to Catholic participation and support of the march.

“If the stated aim of the World March of Women were the right to kill Jewish or Irish or Quebec children, Catholic groups would recoil in horror. Yet the March targets for death upon demand just as innocent a segment of our human family – our defenseless brothers and sisters in the womb. The child ripped to death in the womb or the human persons killed through abortifacient contraceptives which have made cemeteries out of sewers have as much right to the pursuit of happiness and holiness as any marching radical feminist.”

Msgr Foy’s letter also notes that a kit published by the Women’s Inter-Church council of Canada (WICC) called “World March of Women 2000, A Reflection and Action Kit for Church Networks”, contains materials incompatible with Catholic belief. Among suggested images of God are those of “Birthing God” and “Bakerwoman God.”

According to CWL leaders, the CWL participation in the march falls under the auspices of WICC.  In other developments, the 42nd Annual Convention of St. Catharines Diocesan Council of the Catholic Women’s League on Wednesday, May 31, 2000 approved a statement to be sent to the Provincial Council meeting opposing participation in the march and encouraging participation in Life Chain instead. The group cited the Catholic Church’s teaching against abortion as the reason for its refusal to participate in the march.
