October 23, 2012 (Life Institute) – “Abortion is not needed to treat cancer. In fact, it’s not needed to treat any medical condition arising in pregnancy.” Those are the opening lines of a powerful and important new video message from the Life Institute, which brings good news for mothers and babies.
That good news has been confirmed by medical experts, and is borne out by Ireland’s experience in maternal healthcare. The demonstrable, verifiable, and certain truth is that abortion is not needed to save a mother’s life. The only purpose of abortion is to kill a baby.
In the coming months we aim to reach hundreds of thousands of people with this message, in a campaign that will be truly game-changing. Abortion campaigners in Ireland have been scaremongering about the need for so-called ‘life-saving abortion’ for almost thirty years. Now the evidence shows that claim to be a lie.
In just 90 seconds our video message clearly and succinctly assembles all the facts which prove that abortion is not ever medically necessary, and that Irish women do not need abortion in order to preserve their lives.
This message is going to ensure a new and widespread understanding of this crucial issue. It uses sharp, concise dialogue and motion graphics to show that abortion is never necessary – and that the testimonies of leading medical experts support that contention.

It reveals that the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists have already testified that treatment for ectopic pregnancy, cancer, pre-eclampsia and other conditions arising in pregnancy are not considered abortion by the profession since there is no intent to harm the unborn child.
It also points out that a major medical review showed that Irish women are never denied medical treatment in Ireland for any condition arising in pregnancy, regardless of our ban on abortion.
And it calls for zero tolerance on misinforming women – because abortion campaigners have been allowed to spin, lie and scaremonger on this issue for too long. The misinformation stops today.
The Life Institute website has a wealth of information available on the issues raised and viewers are asked to visit the site to learn more. They can read the expert testimony of Professor John Bonnar, who told a parliamentary committee that:
“It would never cross an obstetrician’s mind that intervening in a case of pre-eclampsia, cancer of the cervix or ectopic pregnancy is abortion. They are not abortion as far as the professional is concerned, these are medical treatments that are essential to save the life of the mother.”
The outcome of a major International Symposium on Maternal Health held in Dublin this year is also made available. A Select Panel of leading experts at that conference issued the Dublin Declaration which says:
“As experienced practitioners and researchers in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, we affirm that direct abortion – the purposeful destruction of the unborn in the termination of pregnancy – is not medically necessary to save the life of a woman.
It’s time for the truth to be heard. The campaign will be game-changing; it will bring a new level of understanding on this key issue that neither abortion campaigners nor politicians can undermine.
It’s crucially important that we reach that level of understanding now as the so-called ‘expert group’ – stacked with abortion advocates – prepares to report to the Irish government. When that report is issued we can expect the spin and the lies about abortion saving lives to start again. This time, however, the people will not be fooled.
Having being informed, the people will not accept the weasel words that try to re-classify legitimate medical treatments as abortions, nor will they accept legislation that seeks to open the door to abortion on demand in Ireland.
Instead the people will know this: the experts have spoken; the evidence is in; to protect mothers and babies we must keep Ireland abortion-free.
