Seeking God’s forgiveness for abortion will do wonders in your life. Believe me, I’ve seen it.
April 7, 2016 (LifeSiteNews) – There are rare privileges in life that are not measured by fame, money or status. In my case one of the greatest privileges I have experienced was working with women who had had an abortion, but now sought Jesus and forgiveness. Working as a pastor in Minneapolis provided me that very opportunity for nearly ten years.
A local ministry provided help, healing and restoration for women who, having had an abortion, now came to a point of regret, shame, guilt and emotional pain. These groups met quarterly and I was given the privilege of sharing with them the power of Jesus’ forgiveness.
Essentially I broke the talk into three parts. Part one was receiving the Lord’s forgiveness for the abortion. Part two was forgiving others. Part three was forgiving herself.
I was always amazed at the power that came with the biblical truth behind each form of forgiveness. One might expect the tears or sorrow and joy with these groups of women whose common denominator was an untimed pregnancy and abortion. I heard story after story about their complicity in the abortion, parent’s putting pressure of them to just “do away with the pregnancy,” and the indifference or pressure exerted by the father.
The surprise came months and even years later when I would receive a card or phone call that followed this outline. “Pastor Tom, I’m sure you don’t remember me but I attended the recovery class for abortion when you spoke on forgiveness. It was life changing when I consider that I never thought forgiveness was possible. Not only did I receive the gift of Jesus’ forgiveness, but he has given me the strength to forgive those who pressured me into my abortion. I look forward to the day in heaven when I will be united with the child I aborted. Thanks again and keep up the life changing work.”
There are many things we can do in life but these women have showed me what is of vital importance. Sharing the grace and love of Jesus for those living in guilt and shame over abortion is absolutely necessary. While abortion is a horrible thing in the eyes of Jesus he also has a tender forgiving heart for those who come to him, repent of this sin, and seek the power of his love.
