Wendy Davis: Women don’t support late-term abortion because they’re too dumb to understand it
August 6, 2013 (LiveActionNews) - Pro-abortion darling Wendy Davis is basking in all of the attention she’s getting, ever since her 10+ hour filibuster of Texas SB5, which banned abortion after 20 weeks and increased safety regulations for abortion clinics. She didn’t filibuster long enough to delay a vote, but luckily for her, she had a mob of abortion advocates ready to scream long enough to prevent the bill from getting passed. Unfortunately, Davis still failed. Governor Rick Perry simply called a special session, and the bill ultimately passed.
Despite the fact that Wendy Davis really failed miserably in her goal of defeating this bill, and was going against what the majority of both Texans and Americans want, she’s still the darling of the abortion industry. It doesn’t matter to Davis or to her supporters that she is going against the wishes of her constituents. She’s doing everything she can to exploit this media spectacle, right down to parlaying it into a run for governor. And since she has to keep herself in the public eye despite her dismal failure, Davis has been on a nationwide media tour to spread the gospel of abortion.
Monday, she spoke at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., and The Weekly Standard was there to interview her. Besides saying that she doesn’t know what happened in the Kermit Gosnell case and calling abortion “sacred ground” (paging Nancy Pelosi!), Davis remarked that the reason women don’t support late-term abortion is because they just don’t understand it.
TWS: What do you make of polls showing that a majority of women support these late-term bans? There have been a few polls–Washington Post, Huffington Post, different polls–that show women support this. What do you think of those polls?
DAVIS: I again think that a lot of people don’t really understand the landscape of what’s happening in that arena today and what an incredibly small percentage of procedures take place there, but, ah…
What, exactly, is it that women don’t understand that would magically make them start to support abortion on demand up until the day the baby is born? The fact that it’s relatively rare? Just because someone is somewhat uncommon doesn’t mean that it is acceptable. And does it really matter, anyway? As an elected official, her job is to serve her constituents. Her constituents do not support late-term abortion. Instead of basically saying that it’s because they’re too stupid to agree with her, she should be rethinking her views on the issue.

Why is it that women especially are opposed to late-term abortion? It’s impossible to know for sure. Maybe it’s because the baby is so much more identifiably human at that point. Most women who have been pregnant have felt their baby kicking and moving by the 20th week. Some studies are being published showing that the baby can feel pain by the 20th week. Advances in science and medicine are allowing women to see more and more into the womb than they ever have been able to before. And not long after the 20th week, the baby is often able to live outside of the womb.
Whatever the reason, it is a fact that the majority of women oppose late-term abortion. And supposedly, this is because they just don’t get it. Perhaps if they understood what went on during a second- or third-trimester abortion, then they’d support it. (Wait, no, that’s too grisly.)
Is it possible that Wendy Davis, like countless pro-aborts before her, are simply tone-deaf to the very people they claim to be representing? These are the people that call themselves pro-women. They denounce pro-life legislation as a “war on women.” Yet they’re the ones that not only ignore what women actually think about abortion, but smear and demean them for not toeing the pro-abortion line.
Wendy Davis is far from the first to insult pro-life women. They’ve been called men with breasts, and told that women aren’t allowed to be pro-life. Wendy Davis is just following in the noble pro-abortion tradition of insulting and demeaning women who don’t kneel at the altar of abortion. She has to, really, if she wants to continue enjoying all of the attention and praise being heaped on her.
Still, for all the pro-abort talk about supporting women and their choices, it’s abundantly clear that they aren’t really very open to women actually making their own choice on abortion.
