Opinion

Oct. 9, 2013 (SFLA) – Throughout history, social reformers have been vilified and attacked for defending what is right and just. Supporters of slavery tried to discredit and slander abolitionist William Wilberforce. Civil rights activists of the 1960s were attacked with fire hoses and police dogs. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was even killed for his outspoken opposition to the status quo of his day. When evil is rooted out, its proponents respond with hate, trying desperately to cover up their participation.

The abortion movement is deeply rooted in evil. They are actively defending the “right” to kill preborn children, either by committing abortions themselves, helping pro-abortion politicians, volunteering to “escort” scared mothers into their local abortion shop, lobbying against common-sense health standards for abortion facilities, or just apathetically allowing the slaughter to continue. They are fighting to make it easier for abortionists to murder preborn children, and they haven’t been—nor will they ever be—playing nice.

How should pro-lifers respond?

The pro-life movement is deeply rooted in Christian love. It’s deeply rooted in care for preborn children and their mothers. We know that there’s no one more helpless, vulnerable, and innocent than the preborn child in the womb. And we know that if we don’t care for these precious children, our local abortionist will happily dismember them and suction them from the safety of their mothers’ wombs starting at $450 a pop.

In Ephesians 5:11-13, Paul tells us, “Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible.” If Christian love truly permeates everything that we do for preborn children and their mothers, we can’t hide the truth, however uncomfortable it may be.

Exposing the truth of abortion using means such as graphic photos of abortion victims shows the disgusting reality that abortion kills an innocent human being. These photos repulse most people, as they should. But if the photos make people angry, then the injustice that they show should make them even angrier. These photos can also cause mixed emotions from grief. We must be aware that about 1 in 3 women have had an abortion and almost everyone has some personal experience with it. That means we have to tread lightly and with love when discussing abortion with post-abortive women and men because of the psychological trauma that abortion can cause. We were recently on campus at California State University-Sacramento with the Planned Parenthood Project and met one young woman whose experience with abortion led to a highly emotional conversation and a group that did not present the pro-life message in a loving way (video here).

Similarly to using the images, when we say the simple truth that abortion unjustly kills an innocent human being and should be considered murder, people—even some self-proclaiming pro-lifers—become furious. When we publicize the name of the abortionist who lives comfortably in our own community, reaping the benefits of his blood money, “pro-life” people can become uncomfortable or angry as well.

Hiding the truth from people, whether it’s that abortion kills babies or that they live next door to a prominent abortionist, is never loving. It’s exactly what Satan wants to happen and it’s exactly the kind of behavior that allows abortion on demand to continue.

There’s no room for truth or love in the abortion movement as it tirelessly and viciously works to advance murder. The abortion movement will do whatever it takes to continue killing babies and harming women. They’ll continue to lie and ridicule us. They’ll do anything to get us to back down or shut up. They’re not pansies, and we will certainly lose to them if we are. They fight hard because their culture of death depends on it. And we need to fight hard for our lives, literally.

We won’t win unless we speak the truth with love while enduring persecution, hatred, and bigotry from abortion supporters. To win, and truly abolish abortion, we must care more about stopping the injustice of abortion than making friends, or our own personal comfort.

We can’t be afraid to follow Jesus’ radical example of pointing out error in the ways of our opponents. We can’t be afraid to militantly defend the pre-born and their mothers. The definition of “militant” is “vigorously active and aggressive, especially in support of a cause.” We owe innocent preborn children nothing less.
