PETITION: Stop using the Zika virus to push abortion in Latin America

Background:

Pro-abortion organizations, including the UN and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) are leaping on the Zika virus crisis to push for greater access to abortion in strongly pro-life South American countries.

The UN, following the lead of international abortion activists, is urging Latin American countries hit by the mosquito-borne Zika virus to lift restrictions on abortion for pregnant women. Scientists have said there may be a link between the virus and babies born with birth defects, including having smaller than normal heads.

UN human rights chief Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein is pressuring Latin American governments to ensure that women can kill babies that may be infected with the virus by ensuring access to abortion.

“Laws and policies that restrict (women’s) access to these services must be urgently reviewed in line with human rights obligations in order to ensure the right to health for all in practice,” he said on February 5.

In a sane world, it’s the virus that should be targeted for destruction, not a person infected by it. But in our insane world of today, that’s exactly what United Nations (UN) and other groups are doing - going after the victim, instead of the disease.

The UN’s pro-abortion call comes after the World Health Organization (WHO), which declared the outbreak of the virus an international public health emergency February 1, pointed out that no one has died from the virus.

In fact, WHO has described the effects of the virus on its website in pretty mild terms.

“It causes mild fever and rash. Other symptoms include muscle pain, joint pain, headache, pain behind the eyes and conjunctivitis. Zika virus disease is usually mild, with symptoms lasting only a few days,” the website states.

And now abortion advocates along with the UN are capitalizing on the confusion and hoopla surrounding the virus to advance their own agenda against pre-born babies, and all in the name of “health.”

Luckily Latin American religious leaders have seen through the lies and are demanding that international efforts should be focused on eradicating the virus, not the youngest members of the human family who may be infected by it.

“We should never talk about ‘therapeutic’ abortion. Therapeutic abortion doesn’t exist. Therapeutic means ‘curing,’ and abortion cures nothing. It takes innocent lives,” said Honduras Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga in a February 3 homily.

The cardinal is right. Killing babies by abortion won’t help contain the virus. But killing mosquitos will. If we can’t get that right, than we don’t stand a chance to get anything right in the fight against this virus.
