March 22, 2017 (LiveActionNews) — The Silver Spring, Maryland, Planned Parenthood facility closed its doors for good on March 17, 2017, St. Patrick’s Day. The location committed surgical abortions at a rate of about 100 abortions per month. The Silver Spring Planned Parenthood had been operating for 20 years and was the closest Planned Parenthood facility to the University of Maryland campus. While Planned Parenthood said the closing of the clinic was a part of plans to consolidate after two other clinics were opened within a few miles, Operation Rescue reported that the building’s owner had decided not to renew Planned Parenthood’s lease.
Pro-life activist Lauren Handy was on hand to celebrate the clinic’s closing along with other pro-lifers who have been vigilant activists outside the clinic for the last two decades. Handy played a big role in the shutting down of the clinic, beginning back in 2016.

After creating a campaign called “Abortion is Bad Business,” Handy urged the building’s owner, Denise Peel of Peel Properties, not to renew Planned Parenthood’s lease. Peel is Catholic, and Handy asked her to uphold her Catholic faith and not allow an abortion facility to continue to operate on her property. On October 16, 2016, Handy was able to celebrate the news that the clinic’s lease would not be renewed. On Planned Parenthood’s 100th anniversary, Handy was able to announce: “We are so excited that Planned Parenthood is closing!”
A recent national survey shows that the Silver Spring Planned Parenthood is just one of many clinic closures occurring around the country – and at a faster rate than new clinics are opening.
