Democrats are at it again — ignoring reality to gain political power.

In May, I wrote a blog post for HotAir.com mocking the attention Senate Democrats were giving to legislation designed solely to help their vulnerable colleagues. In that post, I noted that issues of the national debt, abortion, and the Benghazi and Veterans Affairs scandals were being ignored so Democrats could focus on “the name of the Washington football team, which 50 Senate Democrats signed a letter opposing, and the important issue of expediting duck hunting permits.”

Well, in light of the Hobby Lobby decision last week, Democrats are adding one more piece of legislation to the list of critical issues like football team names and sportsman bills. From The Hill, with emphasis added:

At least three pieces of legislation being prepared by Democrats would help maintain access to free birth control for women affected by the court’s ruling, though staffers provided few details on Monday.

Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) is leading the push in the upper chamber to craft a broad bill to protect employees’ access to birth control coverage.

A separate measure in the works from Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) would require employers to disclose whether prescription birth control is covered in their company’s health plan, a rule that could land companies in hot water if they opt out.

In the House, Reps. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) and Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) are each working on legislation to amend the RFRA in response to the ruling.

None of the bills will have the votes to pass the House, but Democrats don’t mind.

They reason that the GOP position will place Republicans in a negative light, just in time for midterm elections that put the Senate majority in play.

Got that? In addition to falsely claiming that the Hobby Lobby decision will take away birth control from women, Democrats and their allies are misleading voters on why they are pushing birth control and abortion drug insurance coverage. While the claim is that they want to help women, the reality is they know the legislation is almost certainly not going to make it through the GOP-controlled House — which means Democrats are both lying about their reasons for pushing legislation and prioritizing elections over alleged principles.

Democrats are so desperate for a chance in November's elections they aren't even pretending to care about what the American people need. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, R-NV, even had the gall to say that Democrats were focusing on important issues, and the GOP was stopping attention being given to those issues. Two of the examples cited by Reid were “the sportsman's bill” and “the Hobby Lobby legislation.”

Of course, the reality is, to quote what legal expert Carrie Severino told me last week, “that the number of people who are denied free contraception as a result of the Hobby Lobby decision will be approximately zero.”

In politics, strategy often overrides sound public policy. Democrats are giving a clear example of this, as they ignore the real harms of abortion drugs and devices, and birth control, on women and the unborn. Alas, some Republicans are already taking the bait, as seen in blog posts by two semi-prominent bloggers and a policy reversal by the GOP's candidate for U.S. Senate in Colorado.

It's long past time for social conservatives to stop cowering when the “War on Women” meme arises. Rather than retreat, we should be true to our principles as we aggressively and strategically fight against the real War on Women being promoted and engaged by Planned Parenthood, the Democratic Party, and their allies.

Oh, and the best part of Democrats using the august chambers of Congress to fake concern for women? The hypocrisy of Democrats saying that pro-life activists should respect the Roe v. Wade precedent from the Supreme Court, even as they continue to attempt to override Citizens United, the Court's two recent gun decisions, and now the Hobby Lobby and McCullen cases through state and federal legislatures.
