According to the British Government the total number of human embryos who were intentionally thawed (thus killing them) since 1990 is 2,053,656.  The death toll does not include the countless human embryos that died during the process of attempts at in vitro fertilization.

Peer Lord Alton in the House of Lords requested the figures from the Government’s regulatory agency.  Lord Alton remarked that the statistics represent “wanton destruction on an industrialised scale.”  He called for “honest and open reappraisal of the legislation which permits this to happen.”

During IVF procedures, it is routine to create more embryos than will ultimately be implanted in the mother. The “excess” embryos, which science shows are distinct human beings in the earliest stages of their development, are discarded.

In some cases multiple embryos are implanted simultaneously into the mother to maximize the likelihood of one “taking.” If multiple embryos implant succesfully, and the parents only wanted one baby, doctors will often then recommend a “selective reduction” abortion – to kill one or more of the growing babies.
