National Right to Life News Today has closely followed the legal and administrative proceedings brought against Michigan abortionist Robert Alexander going back to January 2013. But his trail of incompetence and dangerous practices reaches back many years before that.

The best reporting on Alexander has been compiled by Ken Kolker for WOOD-TV, who filed another story yesterday: “Judge blames doctor for dirty abortion clinic.” (More about that below.)

When we last reported on Alexander, Michigan Administrative Law Judge Shawn Downey had just issued a withering nine-page decision in which he found Alexander guilty of both negligence and incompetence.

In finding Alexander guilty under Michigan’s Public Health Code, Judge Downey concluded, “The evidence is overwhelming that Dr. Alexander failed to adhere to the most minimal standards of cleanliness and sanitary conditions…The ultimate responsibility lies with Robert Alexander and he failed miserably in his obligation of due care.”

As NRL News Today readers may recall, this latest episode with Alexander began the night of December 26, 2012, when the landlord called the police saying that someone had broke into the Woman’s Medical Services abortion clinic.

What they found was an abortion clinic “in complete disarray.” [You can see 19 photos of the abortion clinic here]

Judge Downey wrote that they found “biohazard materials unsecured, unsecured used needles, unsecured and unsanitary medical instruments, blood on the floor and walls, patient records strewn about, uncovered buckets containing unknown fluids, unsecured medications throughout the premises, multiple biohazard bags containing used hypodermic needles, and water leaking into the clinic from the room in several locations.”

The Muskegon Fire Marshal found the clinic unsafe and issued a cease and desist order, meaning the clinic could not be occupied.

On November 19, as Kolker wrote, “Alexander is scheduled to appear before the state Board of Medicine Disciplinary Subcommittee to determine whether he should face discipline, which could include revoking his license.”

Kolker does an excellent job of reminding readers that Alexander has alleged offenses far more serious than a disgusting (and unsafe) abortion clinic. He wrote,

“A Target 8 investigation last year revealed Alexander had been the target of repeated allegations of botched abortions – allegations dismissed without investigation by the chairman of the Michigan Board of Medicine, Dr. George Shade. Years before, Shade had helped Alexander get his license back after a prescription drug conviction. Target 8’s investigation led to a new state law requiring better oversight.”

Kolker interviewed one of those women, a 34-year-old Muskegon County woman, who says Alexander left her unable to have children. She “wonders why it is taking so long to revoke his license.” She told Kolker,

“I would say shame on you to every single one of them and way to go doing your job because not one of them did,” the woman, who asked not to be identified, said of state officials. “If they did, not one of us would be in this position.”

“He stole the most important ability that a woman can possibly possess, and I won’t get that back, but they can reward him by still giving him a license. It’s unbelievable,” she continued.
