SPAIN, March 29, 2018, (LifeSiteNews) – Starting at 2 P.M. Thursday, flags will be lowered to half-mast at all of Spain’s military installations in order to commemorate the death of Jesus Christ.

Flags will remain lowered until one minute after midnight Easter Sunday morning at all units, bases, and barracks, including the Ministry of Defence in Madrid.

Christians this weekend commemorate the death and resurrection of Jesus, an act which Christians believe redeems them from sin and opens a path to heaven.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence, no longer available online but reported by the UK Catholic Herald, “the practice dates back several decades and ‘forms part of the secular tradition of the armed forces.’”

“The Spanish military will take part in 152 parades and celebrations to mark Holy Week in 80 cities across the country this year,” continues the report, “including Seville, Granada, Madrid and the Canary Islands.”
