Leo Varadkar's shock resignation as Irish prime minister comes just weeks after voters delivered a landslide rejection of the government’s proposed amendments to redefine marriage, motherhood, and the family.
The referenda defeat represent a 'huge victory for the people of Ireland and it’s the first nail in the coffin for this ideologically captured government,' women's advocacy group leader Laoise De Brún said.
'I believe one of the reasons that Ireland has become so authoritarian in recent years is that the Government and the so-called Opposition are simply on the same page on many issues.'
'When we see death rates 3,000 higher in a small six-week period than they were in a six-week period pre-COVID, we can’t have the Government standing idly by,' said Deputy Peadar Tóibín.
