Last year, the controversial Russian-linked International Boxing Association (IBA) disqualified Khelif from its Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi, with IBA chief executive Chris Roberts telling BBC sports editor Dan Roan last week that a test of the athlete found XY chromosomes.
'Imane Khelif has won & will advance on to the semi-finals at the Olympic Games guaranteeing him an Olympic medal,' said Riley Gaines. 'In other words, a woman has had her Olympic run & dreams crushed by a male all while being punched in the face.'
The fight is causing controversy online, with many pointing to the fact that while Yu-ting does not identify as intersex or as transgender, the boxer was previously stripped of an International Boxing Association medal after reportedly failing a sex test.
The match has caused widespread outrage, for it is being widely published on social media that the Algerian boxer is 'a man' or 'male' and has 'XY chromosomes.' But some fans remain emphatic the boxer is indeed a woman.
The Olympic Committee approved two allegedly male boxers to fight as ‘women’ after previously failing gender tests and being disqualified for having male chromosomes: Lin Yu-Ting of Taiwan and Imane Khelif of Algeria.
