A political compromise on marriage legislation has made temporary political bedfellows of two intractable foes in Rhode Island: pro-family advocates and gay activists.
Brazil's Supreme Federal Tribunal has ruled that homosexual unions may be granted "stable union" status despite the Brazilian Constitution's limitation of such unions to heterosexuals.
An official with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services said that the new civil unions legislation had complicated the state's relationship with church groups.
"The approval of forms of union that pervert the essence and end of the family, ends by penalizing all those who, not without effort, are committed to living stable affective bonds," Benedict said.
