Four British Christians who have clashed with the Equality Act, brought the complaint to the European Court of Human Rights after they each lost their appeals in British courts.
“A loss in this case would have meant, in essence, that it would be illegal ... to have religious symbols in any state institution anywhere in Europe,” said ADF Legal Counsel Roger Kiska.
The ECHR has a history of issuing rulings that effectively overturn laws of sovereign states, including one that ordered Italy to remove crucifixes from all public schools and offices.
