Minister of Education Laurel Broten told reporters she is introducing an amendment that will prevent schools from barring use of the name gay-straight alliance for the clubs.
Education Secretary Arne Duncan said that "gay-straight alliance" (GSA) groups "can play an important role in promoting safer schools and creating more welcoming learning environments."
“Pride is an excellent way to get the message across to the community, the government, and the Catholic School system," said Leanne Iskander, spokesperson for ‘Catholic Students for GSAs.’
The Catholic Bishops issued their remarks on the eve of a critical vote by the Halton District Catholic School Board on whether or not to retain their policy on dealing with homosexuality.
