CeCe Telfer had previously competed in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men’s Division II 400-meter runs as recently as 2016 and 2017; he ranked 200th in 2016 and 390th in 2017. He then switched to the women’s Division II in 2019, coming in first in the 400-meter run.
State legislators drafting and passing bills are responding to widespread concern that allowing transgender athletes to compete against girls would increase risk of injury to girls and strip deserving females of opportunities for accolades and scholarships.
'These bills are about fairness and inclusion, making room in competitive sports for everyone to feel comfortable,' Rep. Barbara Dittrich (R-Oconomowoc), lead sponsor of the bills, said. They will now be considered by the Republican Senate, though neither measure is likely to be signed by Democrat governor Tony Evers.
