The document, entitled 'Traditionis Custodes,' issues several restrictions on the celebration of the Latin Mass, with the opening point containing a direct contradiction of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI’s 2007 document 'Summorum Pontificum.'
The auxiliary bishop of Astana, Kazakhstan discussed what would happen if the Vatican moved to restrict the Traditional Latin Mass. Commenting on the situation of the SSPX – and whether priests might seek to join the SSPX should the Old Mass be restricted – Schneider said it is ‘difficult' to say that SSPX priests 'are outside the church or are schismatic when they possess the ordinary faculties of Confession given by the Pope himself.’
'You would have done better to demonstrate before your priests and ask them: why are you stuck on such a little thing?' Archbishop Roland Minnerath told faithful who gathered in a peaceful demonstration in front of his archiepiscopal palace on Saturday morning.
'Let us pray that the Divine Majesty ... will deign to enlighten the Sacred Pastors so that they desist from their purpose and indeed promote the Tridentine Mass for the good of Holy Church and for the glory of the Most Holy Trinity.'
At a time when Catholics are leaving the Church by the thousands, and young people especially are deserting the faith, traditionalist parishes are seeing explosive growth, marked in particular by an influx of young families. So why would any Catholic prelate, intent on evangelization, want to interfere with the growth of traditional Catholicism?
