Colombian pro-lifers, led by the nation's Conservative Party, say they have now gathered five million signatures for their petition for a constitutional amendment prohibiting all abortions.
Although governments have reduced or eliminated funding of Planned Parenthood, UN agencies are still filling IPPF coffers with grants. In 2010, UNFPA increased its contribution to over $1.6 million.
The decision followed a meeting in Geneva with a committee of the UN's "Periodic Universal Review," a process that claims to examine the human rights records of individual countries.
“It is detrimental to not have adequate family planning resources,” said the US delegate. “Why is there a resistance to acknowledging access to family planning as a necessity?”
The decision was made by Guatemala's delegate during the negotiations on a new UN resolution on "Fertility, reproductive health and development", terms that are often associated with pro-abortion measures.
