Pope St. Callixtus was martyred by the Romans after drawing many converts from paganism
St. Callixtus built the basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere; and enlarged the catacombs on the Appian Way, in which many holy pontiffs and martyrs were buried; hence this cemetery is called by his name.
