More than 60 House members wrote to Navy Secretary Ray Mabus this week to object to the Navy's initial ruling, saying the service was violating the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act.
The U.S. Presbyterian Church is set to begin ordaining openly homosexual clergy, crossing the final procedural hurdle this week after a decades-long battle.
"I would like to respectfully remind you that the Internal Revenue Service frowns upon churches and religious organizations devoting time to influencing legislation," a staffer for the representative wrote the priest.
“Simply because he donated to Prop. 8, he was declared by the gay rights movement to be unacceptable for public office,” said Maggie Gallagher, chairman of the National Organization for Marriage.
The groups have taken the government to task for attempting to equate natural marriage with so-called gay “marriage” and civil unions, even though marriage is protected in the Constitution.
