TORONTO, April 3, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In the lead up to the landmark 2009 March for Life in Ottawa, which mourns the 40th anniversary of abortion in Canada, Campaign Life Coalition has undertaken a petition drive calling for legal protection of human life from the moment of conception to natural death.

Organizers of the pro-life petition drive say they hope that the many thousands of pro-life Canadians that will attend this year's annual March for Life in Ottawa, and those that may not be able to make it, will download the petition (available here: http://campaignlifecoalition.com/images/OSM09petition.pdf) and gather as many signatures as possible.

Signed petitions will be forwarded to pro-life Members of Parliament beginning next week. Pro-life MPs will present the petitions to the House of Commons on a daily basis as they are received, to bring the attention of the House to the pro-life campaign and the desire of Canadians to defend life.

Campaign organizer Mary-Ellen Douglas told LifeSiteNews that because the 2009 National March for Life on May 14th is approaching quickly, pro-lifers should send in each sheet as it is filled in, instead of waiting until the last minute to send in multiple sheets.

Mary-Ellen mentioned that some signed petitions have been faxed to the CLC office, but pointed out that only original signed petitions are valid and must be sent in by mail or other form of direct delivery.

"We hope to have pro-life MPs stand up in the House every day from now until the March for Life and say 'I have received a petition from concerned Canadians calling upon Parliament to pass legislation for the protection of human life from the time of conception (fertilization) until natural death'," Mary-Ellen told LSN, and added "Please take the petition to your church, your prayer group, your workplace, and gather as many signatures as you can, then send them to us as soon as each sheet is filled."

CLC National President, Jim Hughes, is encouraging everyone to participate in the petition drive and to come out for the National March for Life on May 14th in Ottawa.

"Every year, thousands of Canadian pro-lifers speak out against the injustice of abortion at the National March for Life in Ottawa and Provincial demonstrations across the country," Hughes said.

"Please take part in this very important demonstration this year. We want Canadians to take notice of the tragic consequences of abortion - the killing of so many unborn children, the damage it causes to women and the harm it has inflicted on society. Human beings are the earth's most precious resource but Canada is blithely eliminating nearly 100,000 unborn children - future teachers, artists, scientists, entrepreneurs, laborers, parents, taxpayers - without consideration of what we are really doing."
