"There’s a vacuum in D.C. of people who understand where rights come from," says Zach Dasher. "Rights don’t come from men. They come from God."

WEST MONROE, LA – The “Duck Dynasty” family may soon be in the chambers of Congress.

Emphasizing that his “basic platform … begins with God,” the nephew of “Duck Dynasty” patriarch Phil Robertson has declared his candidacy for the Republican nomination for the 5th Congressional District of Louisiana.

In an interview with Reuters, Zach Dasher said he wants “to go to D.C. to restore America to what she once was.” Dasher is on leave from his job as a sales representative for a pharmaceutical company.

Dasher may face sitting Congressman Vince McAllister, a Republican, who has until August to declare his candidacy for re-election. McAllister, a married man, was famously caught kissing a staffer, which led to him to declare he would not run again. He later said he was uncertain whether he would run for office.

In the special election that he won last year, McAllister won the backing of a member of the Robertson family. Dasher says the family fully supports his budding candidacy, and that McAllister's situation did not play a factor in the decision to run. Three candidates had previously entered the GOP primary race.

Dasher told The Associated Press that “the elite political class thinks they can be running our lives,” and that “there’s a vacuum in D.C. of people who understand where rights come from.”
“Rights don’t come from men. They come from God,” he said.
