Vatican News praises pro-abortion ‘Catholic’ woman who recited poem at Biden’s inauguration

In an interview with Amanda Gorman, the Holy See's news outlet never mentioned her staunch support for killing the unborn and spoke of her with reverence.

VATICAN CITY, February 15, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) – In a recent interview, the Vatican’s news outlet, Vatican News, joined other left-wing publications such as TIME and The New York Times and liberal politicians in praising Amanda Gorman, the young, pro-abortion woman who read a poem at Joe Biden’s inauguration. The interview and its tone appear to demonstrate implicit acceptance of Gorman’s anti-Catholic views on abortion.

Gorman appeared in the spotlight when delivering a poetic address at Biden’s inauguration on January 20. The address has since been described as a “spoken-word attack on Donald Trump and his followers,” containing references to an attack on democracy, attributed to former President Trump.

Her words were welcomed in gushing tones by left-wing America Magazine in an article that suggested her political attack possessed divine qualities and claimed her words “made us believe in the beauty of our future, precisely because of the poem’s own beauty. Her work speaks of God — even shines a light on God — simply because it is beautiful.”

Vatican News’s interview with Gorman focussed on the issues of education and poetry. In a tone similar to America Magazine, Vatican News also equated some divine qualities to Gorman, hailing her as a woman who had made the “dream of a ‘healed’ humanity tangible.”

While mentioning that Gorman is Catholic, (she attends St. Brigid’s Catholic Church in Los Angeles), Vatican News conducted the interview without making any reference to God, or the Catholic faith. Instead, deputy editorial director Alessandro Gisotti focused on how poetry could affect Pope Francis’s call for building of bridges. In turn, Gorman decried how she believed poetry is taught as the “arena of an old, dead, white and male intellectual elite,” mentioning that poetry could “sanctify, purify, and rectify, even amidst discord.”

Gisotti also compared Gorman with Malala Yousafzai and Greta Thunberg, suggesting that Gorman had become a leader of a movement “challenging the powerful of the earth.”

“The world is being rocked and changed by the next generation, and it’s time we listen to them,” declared Gorman.

However, while presenting Gorman as a Catholic exemplar, Vatican News did not question her about her support for abortion, even though she talked about listening to the “next generation.”

Gorman has made no secret about her very public support for the killing of the unborn. In a 2019 video for Now This News, Gorman delivered a poetic address in which she called on people to “fight to keep Roe v. Wade alive,” and outlined “eight reasons to stand up today against abortion bans in the United States.”

She described abortion bans as a means of controlling women and sustaining the “patriarchy.”

Responding to the video, Nigerian-born human rights activist and founder of Culture of Life Africa Obianuju Ekeocha recently wrote: “Many people on my timeline were admiring and tripping over her as she presented her slam poetry at the inauguration. So I thought to share her slam poetry from two years ago, in defence of abortion. Women’s ‘Reproductive destinies’ she says. Shameful.”

So strong and public is Gorman’s support for abortion that Planned Parenthood issued a message after the inauguration demonstrating the sharing of ideologies and saying how “We’re feeling uplifted after listening to @TheAmandaGorman’s poem at yesterday’s inauguration. And we’re planning to take this energy with us into the rest of 2021.”

Planned Parenthood president Alexis McGill Johnson also commended Gorman. “Like many, I’m still feeling the powerful words of @TheAmandaGorman. Just going to leave this here! If we merge mercy with might, and might with right, then love becomes our legacy and change our children’s birthright.”

The promotion of Gorman and her pro-abortion, liberal agenda by abortionists and the liberal media has now been bolstered by the interview that Vatican News conducted with her. Commenting on Gorman’s interview with Vatican News and the scandal that such promotion of the pro-abortion “Catholic” sends, Ekeocha wrote, “You do know she is firmly in support of abortion right? This is @VaticanNews and so should be exemplary for Catholics all over the world.”

The interview with Vatican News would thus seem to be another indication of the news outlet’s left-leaning tendencies. In fact, writing shortly after the inauguration, LifeSiteNews co-founder John-Henry Westen commented on how the “Catholic left” went predictably “gaga” over her.

In a tone shared by America Magazine’s promotion of Gorman, Vatican News highlights and praises her performance at the inauguration of a pro-abortion politician but avoids any mention of her non-adherence to Catholic teaching on abortion. Both focus on the “intelligent young lady” as well as her achievements but ignore her rejection of Catholic teaching, which states that the Church has always taught the “moral evil” of every procured abortion. (CCC #2271)

The manner in which Vatican News identified Gorman as a leader of a new movement challenging the powerful was also mirrored by former first lady Michelle Obama in a recent interview she conducted with Gorman. Obama pointed to the violent Black Lives Matter riots and how poetry could be used as a means to “demand change,” with which Gorman agreed, saying that “(p)oetry and language are often at the heartbeat of movements for change.”

Gorman repeated this in her comment to Vatican News, noting she had “no doubt that many more great social movements will begin in the classroom.”

“I am the hurricane that comes every single year, and you can expect to see me again soon,” Gorman stated in closing her discussion with Obama.

Nickelodeon proposes LGBT, trans, pansexual ‘pride’ and more in Blue’s Clues song

February 15, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) — Since 1996, Blue’s Clues has been a staple of early-childhood television. But like most long-running pop culture properties to make it to the present day, the show’s current stewards have injected it with a dose of pro-LGBT messaging.

On February 11, the official YouTube channel for the show’s current incarnation, Blues Clues & You!, published a video featuring a song about the alphabet. Most of the video is standard children’s fare, but as stylized letters scroll across the screen during the refrains, the letter P can be seen sporting a rainbow pattern and a heart.

When the song reaches P, it announces that “P is full of Pride!” and the letter is flanked by eight different “pride” flags. In addition to the widely-recognizable homosexual and transgender pride flags, the pro-LGBT Out identifies the others as representing non-white LGBT, asexual, lesbian, bisexual, nonbinary, genderfluid, intersex, and pansexual “pride.”

According to Breitbart, the video has not aired on television as of Friday, February 12. While the video’s words and imagery do not convey the topic of sexuality in a way that would be understandable to children watching, the clip appears intended to get children to ask their parents what the flags mean, forcing families into discussions parents may feel their children are too young for, as well as setting up potential conflicts with Blue’s Clues’ endorsement of LGBT “pride” and parents’ own values.

While the Federal Communications Commission is legally empowered to regulate children’s television content for the sake of “protecting children from potentially harmful programming and supporting parents’ ability to determine the programming their children will be exposed to at home,” current law and judicial precedent appears to define “obscene” and “indecent” material too narrowly for the above video to constitute an actionable violation.

Promoting homosexuality and gender-fluidity is nothing new for children’s television. In 2018, the final season of Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time depicted a lesbian kiss, and its Steven Universe featured a lesbian wedding. Other recent examples of “children’s” or “all-ages” animation to incorporate LGBT content include PBS’s Arthur, Cartoon Network’s Clarence; Netflix’s Voltron: Legendary Defender and She-Ra and the Princesses of Power; Nickelodeon’s The Legend of Korra and The Loud House; the Disney Channel’s Star vs. The Forces of Evil; Amazon’s Danger & Eggs; and even the preschool-aimed Disney cartoon Doc McStuffins.

Last year, Nickelodeon drafted its iconic character Spongebob Squarepants into a Twitter message celebrating LGBT “Pride” month.

NASHVILLE, Tennessee, February 15, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) — Two Republican politicians introduced a bill in Tennessee which would allow fathers of an unborn child to prevent the mother from aborting the child.

State Sen. Mark Pody and state Rep. Jerry Sexton are sponsoring the legislation, with Pody introducing the bill into the state senate, and Sexton introducing it in the Tennessee House of Representatives. The bills are named SB0494 and HB1079, respectively.

The bill reads: “A person may petition a court with jurisdiction over domestic relations matters to request an injunction to prohibit a woman who is pregnant with the person’s unborn child from obtaining an abortion.”

A man would have to file a petition with the court, and the hearing would have to be held within 14 days.

The court would be able to issue the injunction preventing the abortion, at a hearing where both parties are present, providing that certain conditions are met. The petitioner must prove that he “is the biological father of the respondent’s unborn child; There is a reasonable probability that the respondent will seek an abortion prior to giving birth to the unborn child.”

In addition, if the couple is unmarried, the man must execute “a voluntary acknowledgement of paternity … that is not subject to being rescinded.” For a man to prove that he is the father of the unborn child, he would not be required to take a DNA test.

In comments made to Fox 17 News, Pody mentioned that the mother would also be able to make her case, defending her choice for an abortion.

If the injunction was issued by the court, in alignment with the text of the proposed bill, it would “prohibit the respondent from seeking or obtaining an abortion.” Should the mother ignore a court ruling on the matter, the court could hold her “in civil or criminal contempt and punish the respondent in accordance with the law.”

The proposed pro-life legislation has been met with angry responses by abortion advocates online. Tennessee Democrat state Sen. Brenda Gilmore commented on the bill, decrying her Republican colleagues' attempts to protect the unborn. “Always making the news and always about controlling a woman’s body. We cannot fund our schools to the fullest but we can work our hardest to secure a woman’s womb,” she wrote.

In a statement to the Huffington Post, Francie Hunt, executive director of Tennessee Advocates for Planned Parenthood, also attacked the bill, calling it “an unconstitutional, insulting, and dangerous bill. Nobody should have the power to make health care decisions for someone else — not a judge, a partner, and certainly not a rapist regardless of paternity.”

However, speaking to Fox 17 News, Pody defended the bill, pointing to the rights of the father in the life of the unborn child. “If he can prove to the courts that he is the father, the biological father, then he has rights to what’s going on with his son or daughter.”

“In this case, we’re saying that we want that father who is just as much of a parent as that mother is, it took two of them to create this human being, and we believe that they should have that opportunity to raise that child,” Pody continued.

Pody and Sexton aim for the bill to take effect on “July 1, 2021, the public welfare requiring it.” Currently, the bill passed on its second consideration, and has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

A 2014 survey by Pew Research Center found that 55% of adults in Tennessee held abortion to be illegal in all or most cases. The Guttmacher Institute presented data revealing that in 2017 there were 12 abortion facilities in the state, and over 12,000 abortions were carried out that year.

Tennessee already has a number of pro-life defenses against abortion in place. In 2014, the state managed to pass a pro-life amendment to the state constitution, despite challenges in federal court by abortion provider Planned Parenthood. The amendment stated that the constitution did not contain protect “a right to abortion or the funding of an abortion.”

Furthermore, should the 1973 Supreme Court ruling Roe v. Wade be overturned, the Human Life Protection Act would immediately take effect, making it a felony to perform or attempt to perform an abortion.

It’s not the first time the two Republican lawmakers have partnered in pro-family legislation. In 2019, Pody and Sexton drew up legislation seeking to prohibit same-sex “marriages” in the state, noting that despite the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges decision to legalize same-sex ”marriage,” Tennessee had already passed a state law and amended its constitution to limit marriage to one man and one woman. However, the bill did not pass either the state house or senate.

SPAIN, February 15, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) —Forty-six nursing home residents who had received their first dose of Pfizer-BioNTech’s fast-tracked vaccination against COVID-19 at the beginning of January had died by the end of the month, Spanish media have reported.

Staff first reported a coronavirus outbreak at Nuestra Señora del Rosario (Our Lady of the Rosary), a nursing home in the province of Cadiz, Andalusia in Spain on January 12, in the wake of a vaccine distribution campaign.

The Ministry of Housing and Families intervened in the private facility which houses up to 145 residents and where local media reported on February 4ththat a further 28 of 94 residents as well as 12 staff members had tested positive for COVID-19.

At another nursing home in the same southwestern Spanish province, in Novo Sancti Petri, in Chiclani, 22 elderly residents died and 103 were infected following a vaccination campaign.

Similar outbreaks and death clusters following vaccination have been reported across the globe, including:

  • 29 elderly people died in Norway shortly after receiving Pfizer’s vaccination.

  • 13 deaths among 40 residents following vaccination at one nursing home in Germany were dismissed as “tragic coincidence.”

  • 10 deaths in a German palliative care patients within hours to four days of COVID-19 vaccination were deemed a “coincidence.”

  • 22 of 72 residents of a nursing home in Basingstoke, England have died following vaccination.

  • 24 seniors at a nursing home in Syracuse, NY were reported to have died from COVID-19 as of January 9, 2021 despite having been vaccinated beginning December 22, 2020.

  • 10 cases of COVID-19 were reported on January 28 among seniors who had received both doses of Pfizer’s vaccine at one care home in Stockholm Sweden. The residents were vaccinated on December 27 and again on January 19.

  • The COVID-19 death toll in the small British enclave of Gibraltar numbered 16 before it launched its Pfizer vaccination campaign on January 10, 2021 and then shot up to 53 deaths 10 days later and to 70 seven days after that. According to a Reuters report, the Gibraltar Health Authority declared there was “no evidence at all of any causal link” between 6 of the deaths that were investigated and the Pfizer’s vaccine, despite the individuals having tested negative for Covid-19 before vaccination,  but positive “in the days immediately after.”

  • 4,500 COVID-19 cases in Israel occurred in patients after they had received one dose of Pfizer’s vaccine and 375 of those vaccinated patients required hospitalization, Israeli news media reported on January 12.

  • Seven adults living in a care home in Saskatoon tested positive for coronavirus a week after residents were vaccinated at the Sherbrooke Community Centre, the CBC reported. There were no positive cases at the time of vaccination.

  • Seven residents at a Montreal long-term care facility tested positive for Covid-19 within 28 days of being vaccinated with Pfizer’s vaccine, prompting the province of Quebec to delay the second Pfizer dose.

  • Abercorn Care Home in Scotland, which began COVID-19 vaccinations on December 14, 2020 was home to an outbreak of the virus by January 10 and the National Health Service for the region refused to comment on whether vaccinated residents were ill. A care home staff group founder told the Scottish Daily Record : “We have had members of our group whose parents have had the vaccine and then two weeks later have tested positive for coronavirus.”

  • All of the residents at a home in Inverness, Scotland were vaccinated against COVID-19 early in January, but 17 became infected with the virus after the first dose.

The UK Medical Freedom Alliance – a group of doctors, scientists, lawyers and other professionals who advocate for informed consent in the United Kingdom – published an urgent open letter to Nadhim Zahawi, Minister for COVID-19 Vaccine Deployment; Matt Hancock, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care; and two vaccine oversight agencies calling for an immediate audit of the deaths following vaccination in the U.K.

The group refers to graphs showing a surge in care home deaths and cites data from the Office for National Statistics that residents’ deaths tripled in the two weeks between 8th and 22nd January 2021 at a time when there was a massive increase in the rate of vaccinations in care homes.

Similar graphs for Israel, Ireland, Bahrain and Jordan show a similar correlation.

The UKMFA points to the “statistically insignificant” safety data on elderly people in COVID-19, who they say were “under represented” in vaccine clinical trials.

“We postulated that there may be increased vaccine side-effects in this group, which would only become apparent when many thousands of them had received vaccinations,” the letter states.

The World Health Organization’s Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) updated its recommendations for Moderna’s vaccine administration on January 26 stating that while vaccination is recommended for older persons due to the risks of Covid infection, “very frail older persons with an anticipated life expectancy of less than 3 months” should not be automatically vaccinated but should be “individually assessed.”

Aide admits NY gov. hid COVID-19 nursing home deaths to avoid investigation

ALBANY, New York, February 15, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) — Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s (D-NY) top aide privately apologized to Democratic lawmakers for withholding the numbers of COVID-related deaths in the state’s nursing homes in order to avoid a legal investigation and negative political attention.

“We froze,” said Melissa DeRosa, in a striking admission during a video conference with state Democrat leaders late last week, the New York Post reported.

Having rejected demands for accurate numbers from the state’s legislators last fall, the secretary to the governor pleaded that they feared former President Donald Trump would turn “this into a giant political football … He starts tweeting that we killed everyone in nursing homes … He starts going after [New Jersey Gov. Phil] Murphy, starts going after [California Gov. Gavin] Newsom, starts going after [Michigan Gov.] Gretchen Whitmer.”

DeRosa also explained the Cuomo administration feared that President Trump would direct “the Department of Justice to do an investigation into us.”

“And basically, we froze,” she admitted to the lawmakers on the call.

Her statements also indicate pro-abortion Cuomo and his aides intentionally concealed the data fearing it may be used as evidence by the DOJ: “Because then we were in a position where we weren’t sure if what we were going to give to the Department of Justice, or what we give to you guys, what we start saying, was going to be used against us while we weren’t sure if there was going to be an investigation.”

Instead of seeking the forgiveness of the families of thousands of seniors who died prematurely, or to the critics of the administration’s March 25 Health Department directive requiring nursing homes to admit infected patients, DeRosa sought reconciliation with her fellow Democrats for the political embarrassment it caused them.

“So we do apologize,” she said. “I do understand the position that you were put in. I know that it is not fair. It was not our intention to put you in that political position with the Republicans.”

“It’s not enough how contrite they are with us,” said Assemblyman Ron Kim (D-Queens). “They need to show that to the public and the families — and they haven’t done that.”

In addition to rebuffing the demands for these death tallies by fellow Democrat legislators in the state, Cuomo and his administration refused requests from the media and even fought a Freedom of Information lawsuit filed by the Empire Center on Public Policy.

Instead of releasing all of the relevant data, the New York Health Department only provided the numbers of residents who died in their nursing homes. But late last month, Attorney General Letitia James, also a Democrat, released a report revealing that death numbers rise by around 50% when nursing home fatalities of residents who were infected with COVID-19 and then died in a hospital are included.

Following this disclosure, New York Health Commissioner Howard Zucker released figures showing that when including this latter category, the numbers rise from 8,711 deaths to 12,743. Adding in those killed by COVID-19 in assisted living/adult care facilities, the totals came to 15,049.

For months, New York was the hardest hit of any state by the pandemic, due in large part to the coronavirus spreading within the state’s nursing homes. In March, Cuomo ordered that nursing homes cannot turn away patients diagnosed with COVID-19, despite the fact the virus is most dangerous to the elderly.

Cuomo initially tried to blame nursing home fatalities on the Trump administration by claiming that a federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance forced him to put the infected back in nursing homes. But Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) explained that the CDC actually called for elderly housing decisions to be made on a case-by-case basis, factoring in the “ability of the accepting facility to meet the recommended infection control practices,” such as the “ability to place residents in a designated COVID-19 care unit that is equipped with the resources and (personal protective equipment) to safely prevent the spread of infections.”

Cuomo’s placement of individuals known to be infectious among the state’s most vulnerable contrasts sharply with the extreme measures New York leaders have taken to prevent spreading the virus in less risky situations, such as restricting in-person religious services

Despite his overall handling of the pandemic, Cuomo had enjoyed a media narrative presenting him as a model leader, which the governor used to release a book on Leadership Lessons From the COVID-19 Pandemic. Though he omitted any mention of the numbers of COVID-19 nursing home deaths in his book, Cuomo did tout his self-professed “clear communication, compassion for others, and a commitment to truth-telling.”

In the meantime, New York Republican Congressional Representative Claudia Tenney has called for Cuomo’s resignation, and Congressman Lee Zeldin (R-NY) has demanded the Department of Justice open an obstruction investigation into Cuomo and his administration.

“DOJ needs to immediately open an Obstruction of Justice investigation into Gov Cuomo & his admin,” Zeldin tweeted. “It’s now being reported there has been a direct admission of their nursing home coverup. The families of thousands of dead NY seniors deserve accountability.”

Canadian government announces $15 million in grants for gay, trans, ‘two-spirit’ orgs

OTTAWA, February 15, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) – The Canadian government has announced it is awarding $15 million worth of grants to 76 community groups to be spent on various LGBT interests in the name of “equality.”

CTV News reports that Minister of Diversity, Inclusion, & Youth Bardish Chagger and Minister for Women & Gender Equality Maryam Monsef announced Thursday the finalized list of recipients for the LGBTQ2 Community Capacity Fund.

“As we continue our fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, we must also work to build up and support strength and resiliency, wherever we can,” Chagger said. “It is crucial that organizations serving LGBTQ individuals from coast to coast to coast are supported with the means to do their important and life-saving work.”

Among the spending is $1.5 million across Atlantic Canada to “create a network of service providers” and “develop culturally-relevant resources for underrepresented queer youth”; almost $300,000 to staff the so-called Two-Spirit Alliance (“two-spirit” refers to some indigenous populations’ conception of a third gender); $3.6 million for 19 groups in Quebec to “better understand the challenges of marginalized LGBTQ families, and specific needs of the province’s trans communities”; and millions more across the country for various LGBT youth, community, health, rehab, and retirement centers.

These latest grants, which follow the Canadian government subsidizing abortion groups while defunding Christian organizations, further emphasize the priorities of the Trudeau government. If Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has his way, left-wing favoritism will eventually give way to mandatory conformity; Truedeau’s government is reportedly working on a legislative proposal to ban social media content the government deems “hateful,” as well as the development of a military communications organization dedicated to “using defence activities to influence the attitudes, beliefs and behaviours of audiences.”

UK citizens with learning disabilities will not be resuscitated if they contract COVID-19

LONDON, England, February 15, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) – People in the U.K. with learning disabilities have been told they will not receive resuscitation if they contract COVID-19, according to learning disability charity Mencap.

Last November, the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the Health Department’s regulatory body, launched an investigation into “Do Not Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (DNACPR) decisions taken during the COVID-19 pandemic,” following similar concerns about “the blanket application of DNACPR decisions, that is applying them to groups of people rather than on an assessment of each person’s individual circumstances, and about making decisions without involving the person concerned.”

The review discovered “evidence of unacceptable and inappropriate DNACPRs being made at the start of the pandemic.”

“Reports and studies have shown that there has been a disproportionate impact on a number of groups of people including older people, disabled people,” according to the review.

“The blanket and inappropriate use of DNACPR and poor individual clinical decision making must be seen in the context of decisions and steps that limit older and disabled people’s access to hospital, including to critical care, for necessary treatment for COVID-19 and other conditions.”

The CQC report found, “This could have had an impact, including potentially avoidable death, on older people and disabled people living in care homes, including those with physical and sensory impairments, people with a learning disability or cognitive impairments such as dementia.”

Despite the CQC’s investigative report, Mencap received complaints in January from disabled people who had been told they would not be resuscitated in the event of becoming ill with COVID-19.

Though DNACPRs are normally intended for frail or severely unwell people who would likely receive no benefit from a harsh CPR regimen, assessed on an individual basis between doctor and patient, Mencap said that some people were being given the order for having a learning disability and nothing more.

Mencap’s chief executive Edel Harris said, “Throughout the pandemic many people with a learning disability have faced shocking discrimination and obstacles to accessing healthcare, with inappropriate Do Not Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation notices put on their files and cuts made to their social care support”.

“It’s unacceptable that within a group of people hit so hard by the pandemic, and who even before COVID died on average over 20 years younger than the general population, many are left feeling scared and wondering why they have been left out.”

A spokesperson from the Department of Health and Social Care echoed Harris’ words, saying: “It is completely unacceptable for ‘do not attempt CPR’ decisions to be applied in a blanket fashion to any group of people. This has never been policy and we have taken action to prevent this from happening.”

The Department of Health subsequently “asked the CQC to undertake a review of [DNACPR] notices issued during the pandemic.” The CQC is expected to return this report later in the year.

The “inappropriate” use of DNACPRs comes despite NHS England sending a letter last April to care staff to clarify that “[t]he terms ‘learning disability’ and ‘Down’s syndrome’ should never be a reason for issuing a DNACPR order or be used to describe the underlying, or only, cause of death … Learning disabilities are not fatal conditions.”

Catherine Robinson, a spokeswoman for pro-life defense group Right to Life U.K., expressed dismay at Mencap’s report detailing blanket DNACPR orders: “The apparent discrimination against people with learning disabilities, as found in this case, is shocking.”

Robinson shared her disappointment in the healthcare system, pointing the finger at the government ministers and, indeed, healthcare professionals responsible for allowing such a discrimination to take place: “The Department of Health is certainly saying all the right things in terms of its condemning of this practice, but that it happened in the first place and, according to Mencap at least, appears to still be happening to some degree, is atrocious”.

“The CQC report expected later this year should give a better indication of the extent of the problem but if it really is the case that ‘blanket’ use of DNACPR was implemented for people with learning disabilities during the pandemic, it reveals dark attitudes that at least some people hold in the medical and caring professions about the value of such people’s lives. It reveals a culture which fails to value the lives of the most vulnerable in our society.”

At the same time as Britain is seeing blanket DNACPRs placed on the disabled, Canada’s parliament is en route to passing legislation which would expand the currently accepted criteria for euthanasia to people who are not actually dying, but diagnosed with a non-life-threatening condition, including permanent disability.

Bill C-7, which has already passed its first reading in the House, has been criticized as affording easier access to end one’s life through the country’s Medical Assistance in Dying program than there are helps for living with disabilities.

Amendments to the bill have already passed in the Senate this week which will allow for euthanasia of people with mental illness and for “advance directives,” the latter case being a pre-emptive instruction for people to be euthanized should they become incompetent in the future, as in Alzheimer’s dementia.

Fauci’s logic: Abortion-funding stimulus package needs to pass for schools to reopen

WASHINGTON, D.C., February 15, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) — Dr. Anthony Fauci, President Joe Biden’s Chief Medical Advisor, has asserted that the pro-abortion COVID Relief Bill now working its way through Congress needs to pass in order for the nation’s schools to be able to safely reopen.

Dr. Fauci gave no indication of regret over sacrificing the lives of the unborn by providing massive funding for abortion in the COVID Relief Bill in order to speed the opening of public schools.

“I think that the schools really do need more resources and that’s the reason why the national relief act that we’re talking about getting passed — we need that. The schools need more resources,” Fauci told ABC’s This Week host George Stephanopoulos on Sunday.

Included in the nearly $2 trillion Relief Bill are provisions which would ignore previous abortion funding restrictions covered by the “Hyde Ammendment,” which for decades has been invoked by Congress to prohibit government spending on abortions.

During the 2020 presidential campaign, then-candidate Joe Biden reversed his long-held support for the Hyde Ammendment and signaled that he now backs abortion up to the point of birth.

“Emboldened by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, Democrats in Congress want to force taxpayers to bail out the abortion industry,” warned Washington-based pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA) President Marjorie Dannenfelser in a statement last week.

“Under the new pro-abortion administration, House Democrats are shamefully pushing a massive expansion of abortion on demand, paid for with tax dollars, in the guise of COVID-19 relief — including payouts to abortion giant Planned Parenthood. This divisive agenda flies in the face of the ‘unity’ the Biden-Harris ticket promised to inspire,” said Dannenfelser.

Included in the Democrats’ proposed stimulus package:

  • $750 million for global health activities and billions in funding for community health centers without applying the Hyde Amendment

  • A $50 million funding increase for the Title X program. On the heels of President Biden’s order directing the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services to begin rolling back President Trump’s Protect Life Rule, Title X would once again become a slush fund for abortion businesses like Planned Parenthood.

  • Granting Planned Parenthood access to small business funding

  • Expansions of taxpayer-funded abortion coverage via Obamacare and a new initiative that would fund abortion-covering COBRA insurance

“As we continue to combat this pandemic, all of us can agree that we must rebuild our economy, we must reopen our schools, and we must restore our communities,” said Rep. John Joyce (R-PA), a medical doctor who is a member of the U.S. House Commerce Committee, commenting on the COVID Relief Bill.

“As we discuss these issues that are central to our nation’s recovery, it’s difficult to comprehend why the COVID-19 Relief Bill that we are considering today [gives] millions of dollars for Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers,” said Rep. Joyce in a video message. “If passed, this funding won’t get kids back into the classroom, it won’t get vaccines into arms, and it won’t get Americans back to work.”

“As millions of Americans are struggling with health, economic, and educational ramifications of this pandemic, this is not the time to play politics,” asserted Joyce, adding that Democrats are pushing “extreme anti-life provisions masquerading as COVID-19 relief are a blatant disregard for all pro-life Americans.”

“Polls consistently show that the overwhelming majority of Americans, including millions of rank-and-file Democrats, are opposed to bankrolling abortion businesses whether in this country or overseas,” SBA’s Dannenfelser noted.

A January 27 Marist/Knights of Columbus poll released last month found that 58% of Americans — including 65% of Independents and nearly one third of Democrats — oppose using taxpayer money to fund abortions in the United States.

The same poll found that 77% of Americans — including 55% of Democrats, 85% of Independents, and nearly two thirds of “pro-choice” respondents — oppose using taxpayer dollars to promote abortion overseas.

“If [the Democrats] codify Roe and repeal the Hyde Amendment, they can kiss the House and Senate goodbye in 2022,” tweeted the pro-life group Democrats for Life.

In late January, 200 Republican congressmen vowed in a letter addressed to U.S. House and Senate leadership their “unified opposition to Congressional Democrats’ efforts to repeal the Hyde Amendment and other current-law, pro-life appropriations provisions.”

NOTE FROM LEPANTO: Due to the egregious nature of the CCHD’s malfeasance and/or incompetence, we are asking EVERYONE to sign the petition asking bishops to withdraw from the CCHD and end it completely!

February 15, 2021 (Lepanto Institute) — Several days ago, the Lepanto Institute detailed activities and memberships of three Nashville-based organizations funded by the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) that violate both Catholic teaching and the CCHD’s own grant guidelines. We have yet to receive an official response regarding this report.

Further research shows that the fourth Nashville based CCHD funded organization, the Workers Dignity Project (WDP), is even worse than the previous three. We have direct evidence, including audio and video recordings, that prove WDP is directly encouraging abortion and transgender activism to the poor immigrants and workers it is supposed to be representing. And this isn’t a one-time grant, either. WDP received six grants from the CCHD since 2013 totaling $245,000.

This means that WDP passed through CCHD’s “rigorous screening process” on SIX separate occasions, and that WDP flew under the radar of CCHD’s stringent monitoring process for the better part of a decade. That WDP received a SINGLE grant would show a breakdown of the CCHD’s process. That it received SIX grants shows that this process does not work at all, and that the CCHD is either too incompetent or too compromised to handle Catholic funding and must be shut down immediately.

Furthermore, this evidence was not difficult to come by. We simply reviewed WDP’s own websites and broadcasts as well as the sites of community partners.

Before we get into the main body of evidence, here is a tip to the staff at CCHD. When an organization is included as a “community partner” in a Planned Parenthood annual report, that is a good clue that you should look more closely into an organization before handing over the hard-earned money of faithful Catholics. Take a close look at page 9 of Planned Parenthood Tennessee and North Mississippi’s 2018 Annual Report. Who do you see listed there? Yes, that is Worker’s Dignity Project. Did this give you pause at all before you funded them that year?

Image

CCHD grant guidelines are very clear:

“Organizations that receive CCHD funds must not participate in or promote activities that contradict the moral and social teachings of the Catholic Church. Organizations that support or promote, for example, capital punishment, abortion, euthanasia, racism, war, discrimination, or same-sex marriage are not eligible for CCHD funding.”

Either these grant guidelines mean nothing to CCHD staff, or they are incredibly incompetent at screening grantees. Here is another easy-to-find WDP activity, this time a clear violation of grant guidelines, from 2017. WDP and its radio station 104.1 FM WDYO gave promotional support to Nashville Pride and its “Equality Rally for Unity and Pride.”

Image

Later the same year, WDP’s radio station hosted transgender activist RJ Robles.

Image

Catholic money should not go to organizations giving promotional support to homosexual activism, period.

This is just scratching the surface. WDP should’ve been disqualified as a CCHD grant recipient long ago, but they are STILL getting grants. And this is causing incredible harm to the poor working community that CCHD is supposedly trying to help. WDP’s main clientele are low-income workers and immigrants. Catholic teaching says we should help them and make sure their community receives justice. It does NOT say we should be encouraging these primarily Latino communities to murder their children through abortion or kill their souls with perverted ideologies such as transgenderism.

Here is proof, and when you see it you will be just as shocked and enraged as we are.

First, some groundwork. WDP is co-directed by Cecilia Prado. A quick glance at her social media profile shows some immediate red flags and causes for concern. Her Facebook likes page is littered with pro-abortion, Marxist and LGBTQ activist organizations. Is this who should be leading a Catholic funded organization?

Image

And, true to form, Cecilia Prado’s pro-abortion views bled directly into WDP’s activities. WDP owns and operates a Nashville radio station, 104.1FM WDYO, and on August 22, 2020, Cecilia Prado Interviewed abortion activist and then director of the Mississippi Reproductive Freedom Fund (which directly funds abortions) Laurie Bertram Roberts. Prado herself stated that she was incredibly excited about this interview of a “reproductive justice warrior.”

Image

This interview pushes for the federal funding of abortion, and Prado praises Planned Parenthood and states that her own abortion was a good experience. Bertram Roberts goes on to state that abortion should be comfortable and relates a story about how she took a woman to Red Lobster following the murder of her 18-week baby in utero.

Later in the video both women laugh hysterically about the idea that the Catholic faith of Latinas influences them at all against abortion, and Prado is very pleased that Bertram Roberts is bringing abortion to the “deep south.”

There is no excuse for this grant. Catholic funding went to an organization promoting abortion, and this cannot be disputed, swept under the rug or silently defunded. This is evidence of institutional failure or willful complicity and the only solution after ten years of broken promises and “review and renewals” is the end of the CCHD program.

However, the evidence doesn’t end with one single radio interview.

WDP’s radio station again directly pushed for abortion in the Latina community in a Spanish language program on January 21st titled “Hablemos de Aborto!!

Image

This program featured representatives of WDP speaking with Katherine Diaz from Planned Parenthood’s Hispanic abortion outreach program RAIZ.

We were able to confirm her role with Planned Parenthood based both on her statements in the interview as well as from Planned Parenthood’s own Facebook page:

Image

Going back to the Planned Parenthood’s mention of WDP being a “community partner” in its Annual Report, we also see in this report that PP’s RAIZ program connected with “crucial partners and established a strong presence in Spanish social, broadcast and print media.”

Image

Since the purpose of the Raiz program is to connect with the Latinx community through print and radio, it seems that the nature of the ‘community partnership’ WDP established with Planned Parenthood as far back as 2017 was made through WDP’s radio station.

This radio program discussed abortion in the Nashville Hispanic community and gave arguments in favor of abortion as well as called for activism to spread access to abortion. Here are some clips from the full broadcast:

WDYO also hosted a discussion with the co-director of Healthy and Free Tennessee, a pro-abortion activist organization. The importance of access to commit abortion was stressed in this program.

WDP further promoted both abortion and Planned Parenthood on its social media platforms.

On January 26th of 2021, WDP shared a link to Planned Parenthood’s action fund:

Image

WDP’s radio station is also involved in the promotion of transgenderism. On Dec 21 of 2020, WDYO hosted transgender activist Nicol Aguilar from Asociacion LGBT Nicol House:

Image

This is proof positive that Catholic funding is directly HARMING the communities that so desperately need assistance. This is not an act of justice, but a complete INJUSTICE. The CCHD should be absolutely ASHAMED to have funded such a grantee and speaking of justice, every single staff member involved in the funding of WDP should resign immediately, including the leadership at national CCHD. This is a disgrace!

We are tired of the lies and empty promises. The CCHD needs to end all operations, IMMEDIATELY. And, to any good bishop reading this, the time to stand up to this is NOW. For the sake of your own souls and the souls of the faithful in your care, end this wicked program once and for all.

It is time to END the Catholic Campaign for Human Development!

Please contact the CCHD and demand answers! Ask them how or why organizations like these ever received a grant and if CCHD will demand Catholic money to be returned for violating CCHD guidelines and Catholic moral/social teaching. Also, contact your bishop and ask them to withdraw completely from the CCHD.

Lockdowns lead to food insecurity, even lower incomes in poor countries: study

February 15, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) – An international group of academics from prominent universities detailed the “staggering” effect COVID-19 lockdown measures have had upon lesser and middle-income countries (LMICs). The study found “pronounced declines in employment, income, and food security,” with households unable to meet basic needs. It also warned of an “economic crisis” which would last for “decades” to come.

The paper, entitled “Falling living standards during the COVID-19 crisis: Quantitative evidence from nine developing countries,” was released in Science Advances on February 5. Its team of 26 authors hail from renowned institutions such as the University of California, Princeton, Stanford, and Harvard.

In collating the data, 16 samples were undertaken from nine countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America: Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Colombia, Ghana, Kenya, Nepal, Philippines, Rwanda, and Sierra Leone.

Each country suffered from significant drops in income, with an average of 70% of households contacted reporting a drop. “If these effects persist, then they risk pushing tens of millions of already vulnerable households into poverty,” the paper warned.

Nor was this a phenomenon isolated to households with lower incomes in the countries surveyed, with the authors noting that the “economic shock caused by the global pandemic spans socioeconomic strata within each country, and similar proportions of households at different rungs of the socioeconomic ladder report employment and income decrease.”

There were over 30,000 respondents involved in the study, which was conducted between April and June 2020. Already by April, a number of households were “unable to meet basic nutritional needs.” Graphs document that in Kenya, between March 22 and May 31, there was a 68% rise in children missing meals due to financial or food insecurity. In Sierra Leone, the number of adults and children having to reduce their portions rose by 86% and 68% respectively, between April 19 and June 28.

While the study acknowledged that seasonal food insecurity did occur in those countries, the figures revealed “greatly exceed the food insecurity normally experienced at this time of year. If anything, COVID-19 fortunately hit during a ‘postharvest’ period in South Asia, when many people have grain stocks to draw down.”

This occurrence was described as “particularly alarming,” due to the “potentially large negative long-run effects of undernutrition on later life outcomes.”

The high levels of food insecurity found in the course of the study were “far higher during the 2020 crisis” than in the “same season in previous years.” Presenting Bangladesh as an example, the authors stated that food insecurity was about twice as high compared to previous years. In presenting this particular statistic, the authors defined food insecurity as “missing a meal or reducing portions for at least 15 days in a month.”

Due to the parameters used in formulating results, focusing on quantity rather than quality of food, the authors noted that the results should be unaffected by normal seasonal changes.

Nor were access to food or a drop in income the only issues addressed. Ready access to health care was an issue noted in six countries. In Sierra Leone, an average of 6% of people had health care delayed, while in Ghana the figure was 11%, with numbers rising to an average of 43% in Colombia.

Education was also identified as an area affected by lockdowns, with schools “in all sample countries … closed during most or all of the study period.”

The study found more frequent occurrence of domestic violence between March 22 and May 31. Violence against women rose by an average of 4%, although in mid-April the rate shot up to around 50% in one week. Violence against children rose by an average of 12% during the same 11-week period.

“In these cases, the leading explanation for the effects we document in 2020 is the COVID-19 crisis rather than seasonal fluctuations. It is notable that in both countries, the COVID crisis occurred during the favorable postharvest period with its relatively low level of food insecurity during normal years.”

As a result of lockdowns, the study found often severe and widespread disruption to the economy of countries which were already of sufficiently low income to be termed LMICs. The measures justified as preventing the spread of COVID-19 “seem likely to generate excess future morbidity, mortality, and other adverse longer-term consequences.”

In fact, the economic disruption looks set to be far worse than “other recent global crises, including the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, the 2008 Great Recession, and the Ebola outbreak of 2014.”

While governments have been swift to impose restrictions upon individuals and the economy, the authors of the study warn that these measures will potentially have a disastrous effect upon society, which is worse than the “crisis” they were originally intended to prevent, and could last for “decades into the future.”

“For LMICs, the economic crisis precipitated by COVID-19 may become as much a public health and societal disaster as the pandemic itself.”

The study is not alone in warning of the dangers of lockdowns, as well as the poor effectiveness which they have on preventing the spread of COVID-19. Earlier this year, a group of experts from Stanford University released its own study, revealing there was “no clear, significant beneficial effect” of lockdowns in preventing COVID, “in any country.”

Comparing countries with strict lockdowns, such as England, France, the U.S., and Italy, to those without such restrictions, Sweden and South Korea, the study even discovered that in 12 out of 16 comparisons, lockdowns resulted in increased daily growth in cases.

The Stanford study also highlighted the harmful effects of lockdowns, pointing to an estimated “5.5 million life years for children” in the U.S. due to school closures.

That was in addition to a December study which warned of “168,000 additional under 5 deaths,” and that “by 2022 COVID-19 could result in an additional 9.3 million wasted and 2.6 million stunted children, 168,000 additional child-deaths [and] 2.1 million maternal anemia cases.”

Doctor-turned-patient realizes how disabled people are nudged to be euthanized

Disability rights activists have criticized Bill C-7, calling it discriminatory for offering government-assisted death to the disabled but not to people without disabilities.

February 15, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) — A Canadian doctor suddenly found herself a patient on the ward of a rehabilitation unit after an accident left her paralyzed from the waist down this past October. Now, she said she is worried about the latest expansions to Canada’s legalized euthanasia program and how they will affect people, in particular those with disabilities.

Corrina Iampen, a GP from Kelowna, British Columbia, told LifeSiteNews that just weeks after her paralyzing accident last fall, a doctor in hospital asked her if she would like a “Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) order” put on her medical chart. Iampen said she did not want extra medical measures taken to keep her alive but at the time, those treatments were necessary anyway. She said yes to the “DNR.” The treating doctor then said, “Well, do you want me to just call MAiD?”

MAiD — or Medical Assistance in Dying — is the Canadian euphemism for legal doctor-assisted suicide by injection. Bill C-7, which would expand the accepted criteria for euthanasia to people who are not actually dying but diagnosed with a non-life threatening condition including permanent disability, has already passed first reading in the House. Amendments to allow for euthanasia of people with mental illness and for “advance directives” — for people to be euthanized should they become incompetent in the future, as in Alzheimer’s dementia — passed in the Senate this week.

Although she is not opposed to MAiD in concept, Iampen is worried about how it will be done in practice. “The presentation has to be very delicate, because it doesn’t just impact you as a person, but it also impacts so many people around you,” the 55-year-old doctor said.

Iampen said the doctor who questioned if she wanted MAiD when she was in rehab was generally “very nice,” but “at the time, I was just really surprised by it. I thought it was very aloof.”

The “timing was really poor,” she added, and “inappropriate in the sense that in reality, there are times that you are really struggling and it is something that crosses your mind, the thought — you’d rather have died in the accident — of course it does.”

Recovery has been “very difficult at times,” Iampen said. “You’re not just in shock, some people go through quite a lot of neuropathic pain. I’m one of them. It’s very difficult to describe but its’ there. There’s the loss of mobility and independence and the loss of bladder and bowel control and a whole re-identification process that you’re going through.”

For young people, questions about MAiD at such a vulnerable time might be overwhelmingly tempting, Iampen said, but “even people that are my age that don’t have good supports around them would find it very difficult.”

As a doctor-turned-patient, Iampen began to see how disabled people are treated disrespectfully in the health system. As she was wheeling herself down the halls at the GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre, she saw nursing staff undressing disabled women without closing the door to give them privacy, for example. “You’re relying on staff to help you adjust to this new life” and “some were really amazing,” she said, but others could make her feel “like a burden.”

Iampen said she asked to speak to the director of the rehabilitation clinic before she left, to offer her insights on “how to help others” but the director never came to see her.

The lack of interest in improving quality of life for people before offering MAiD has been a recurring theme under Canada’s program of doctor-assisted killing. In 2017, Roger Foley, then 42 years old and suffering from an incurable neurological condition secretly recorded staff at the London, Ontario, hospital he was housed at for more than two years repeatedly offering him MAiD services while Foley’s requests for self-directed care were denied.

In 2019, doctors were criticized for euthanizing a physically healthy but depressed 61-year-old British Columbia man. His family members said he was not of sound mind and begged him not to go through with the procedure.

Another Canadian doctor, Naheed Dosani, a University of Toronto-affiliated palliative care specialist who cares for homeless people from a mobile unit, testified before the senate on February 1, saying that MAiD is far easier to access than actual help to improve people’s lives. “I work in the trenches, on the frontlines of the homelessness crisis, the opioid overdose death crisis and now the Covid-19 pandemic crisis,” Dosani said. “I work in a world where I can successfully arrange for MAiD in two weeks in an organized and efficient fashion, but also a world where it takes years to get the people I care for into housing, months to get people income support and weeks to get them mental health and harm reduction support, if we’re lucky.”

“I find this morally distressing,” he added. “I want to be clear: I’ve seen people who’ve pursued MAiD because they’ve experienced marginalization.”

Dosani described one patient, a man in his 50s he called “Bob” with multiple sclerosis and wounds whose pain was treated. He opted to die by doctor-assisted suicide because “his protracted disease and complications of it led to an alcohol use disorder which led to him lose housing which led to him losing his family and ultimately being alone.”

He also described having witnessed the opposite scenario, where helping a person’s circumstances changed their mind about wanting to die. “Mary” was a 30-something drug user on the streets who said she wanted MAiD but “after addressing her emotional and physical pain” and getting her housing, “she changed her mind. She didn’t want to die via MAID, she wanted to live because she had a better quality of life. “

“I worry that Bill C-7 will have a disproportionate impact on working class disabled people, people experiencing homelessness, poverty and marginalization, people who can’t support their basic needs like food and shelter and medication,” Dosani told the senate hearings on the bill.

“With 35,000 Canadians experiencing homelessness each night, I expect the same energy that’s been put into passing MAiD into our world and country, that we’ll put the same energy into housing … harm reduction, implementing basic income and pharmacare,” he said.

“If you are making it easier for people to get MAiD you have also an obligation to ensure that people are not forced into vulnerable situations where they feel they need to access MAiD to escape these vulnerable situations,” Dosani concluded.

The rapid expansions to Canada’s euthanasia criteria have critics comparing the country to Belgium and the Netherlands where euthanasia expanded rapidly to allow the killing of children, people with autism and chronic tinnitus, deafness and gender dysphoria related depression. In 2018, details of the Dutch case of a 74-year-old woman with dementia who was surreptitiously given a sedative in her coffee and held down by family members while a doctor gave her a lethal injection came to light.

Disability rights activists, including two separate United Nations watchdogs, have criticized Bill C-7, calling it discriminatory and “ableist” for offering government-assisted death to the disabled but not to people without disabilities. The term ableism refers to the discrimination of and social prejudice against people with disabilities.

“We’re concerned that it massively expands the range of people with disabilities, who potentially will be given access,” Gerard Quinn, the UN’s watchdog for people with disabilities, told the CBC.

“We’re concerned that there might be issues there … undermining their autonomy and their capacity to make the right decisions. I don’t mean the lack of legal capacity. What I mean is subtle pressure being brought to bear by, for example, lack of services or lack of community living options.”

Trudo Lemmens, a member of the Council of Canadian Academies Expert Panel on Medical Assistance in Dying, told LifeSiteNews that he is even more disturbed about how the new MAiD amendments will make suicide a “standard of care.”

“There is no other country in the world that has elevated MAiD as a first-line medical treatment on demand, as an unmodified Bill C-7 would do,” said Lemmens, a professor in health law and policy at the University of Toronto.

In a Policy Review paper he co-authored, Lemmens noted that ordinarily medicine reserves the most severe treatment options for last. A doctor does not usually propose surgery for arthritis without first trying lifestyle modifications and medications. Removed from the “end-of-life” context and within a Supreme Court reading of having the right to refuse any treatments, MAiD becomes a standard-of-care “treatment” option that physicians will have an obligation to provide at the outset and patients will have the right to take.

Attempts to safeguard disabled people from pressure to undergo MAiD were soundly defeated. Senators voted 66-18 (with one abstention) against an amendment, proposed by Conservative Senate leader Don Plett, which would have made it a crime for medical staff to raise the issue of assisted dying with a patient unless the patient requested information about MAiD first.

Lemmens said he is counting on the House to withdraw the Senate amendments which were passed in under two weeks on emotional arguments rather than consideration of the complex issues that will arise. Sen. Pamela Wallin, a member of the Canadian Senators Group who proposed the amendment, said that she has a “history of dementia in my family” and that the law currently traps Canadians in “a perverse diagnosis lottery” so that those diagnosed with incurable cancer can receive a lethal injection, but people with dementia cannot, because they have lost competence.

“I find the superficiality of the discussion and the analysis of some of the senators who approved this … amazing,” Lemmens said. “I hope that saner minds will prevail in the House and people will reject these amendments. If they don’t, I would find it quite disturbing because it makes a mockery of the whole parliamentary process and the serious discussion that preceded this.”

“This is not a bill we should be offering during a pandemic when so many people are suffering from loneliness and economic problems,” Lemmens added.

The Euthanasia Prevention Coalition is calling on Canadians to contact their MPs to and has launched a petition to reject Bill C-7 which has garnered more than 52,000 signatures to date.

Far-left internet watchdog demands Big Tech de-platform COVID-19 vaccine critics

Imran Ahmed, the CEO of the Center for Countering Digital Hate claims that 'anything less than the dismantling of these individuals’ profiles, pages and groups and permanent denial of service' would be 'willing acquiescence' on the part of the Big Tech with what Ahmed called the 'anti-vaxx industry.'

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, February 15, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) — The CEO of an internet watchdog focused on monitoring conversations about COVID-19 has called on Big Tech de-platform and deny service to those who are critical of COVID-19 vaccines.

Last week David Jay of San Francisco’s Center for Humane Technology (CHT) interviewed Imran Ahmed, the CEO of the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), in an online meeting watched by over 500 people. Friday’s half-hour long meeting, entitled “The Disinformation Industry and Covid-19,” was dedicated to criticizing vaccine skeptics.

“Big Tech needs to make a decision, now that we expose the intent, the tactics and the deadly impact of the anti-vaxx industry, and the ways in which social media platforms have become integral to their success,” Ahmed told Jay. “Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Google can stop this now. They could stop providing services to people whose business is in enabling the spread of disease and death.”

Ahmed claimed that “anything less than the dismantling of these individuals’ profiles, pages and groups and permanent denial of service” would be “willing acquiescence” on the part of the Big Tech with the so-called “anti-vaxx industry.”

CHT, which organized the event, lists among its lead supporters the George Soros-founded Open Society Foundations among a host of international organizations working for societal change.

Jay, who led the interview, is an “asexual activist” and the founder of an online community for those who identify as “asexual.”

The CCDH simply states that the organization is “funded by philanthropic trusts.” An August 2020 Off Guardian article notes that as a Non Governmental Organization registered in the U.K. “the CCDH are exempt from audit and can thus keep their finances largely secret.” Ahmed, who has held a number of position in the U.K.’s Labour Party, last year described “anti-vaxxers” as “an extremist group that pose a national security risk.”

Both Ahmed and Jay say that leading critics of vaccines are, in fact, “an industry” dedicated to “sowing doubt” for profit.

“We’re talking about a highly financially motivated and sophisticated industry that profits from spreading disinformation,” said Jay solemnly.

The CHT interviewer invoked the specter of racism by saying that that vaccine skeptics pose “terrifying risks to public health, especially public health in communities of color and other communities that are deeply vulnerable to Covid-19.”

Jay said that social media is designed to show people information that will “generate as much engagement as possible” and that “conspiracy theories” are among the content that performs best. He then expressed a conspiracy theory of his own: that leading critics of vaccines are deliberately manipulating algorithms for profit.

“That has led to the emergence of actors who have built business models around the gaming of that algorithm,” he stated.

“They make money by convincing people not to trust in scientifically validated public health measures and instead ask them to trust in non-scientific ways of thinking about disease.”

Jay was never clear about how such “actors” usually make their money, although later Ahmed did mention an online conference held by the National Vaccine Information Centre which charged participants $80 to attend.

Ahmed said that these “actors” understand “instinctively” and “technically” how to “game algorithms” and also that their message is just the “fruit, the fleshy exterior that makes you want to dig in.”

“What they’re really trying to sow is the seed of doubt,” he stated.

“Doubt about authority. Doubt about the deadliness of Covid. Doubt about safety of the vaccine.”

He called it a “battle of authorities” which pitted organized authorities like “Her Majesty’s Government’s Health Service” against those with “special knowledge that only you can get from them — of course, for a fee.”

“Because these are highly monetized and highly productive actors,” he said.

These “actors” were not named during the meeting, which was mostly a repetitive exchange of remarks about vaccine skeptics and their alleged message that COVID-19 is not dangerous, that vaccines are dangerous, and doctors can’t be trusted. Ahmed recommended that their opponents should stress that COVID is dangerous, praise the vaccine, and shore up doctors’ status.

“Everyone loves doctors,” he exclaimed.

Ahmed spoke briefly about the original mission of the Center for Digital Hate, which was working against movements spreading misinformation to encourage identity-based hate.

In 2020, the CCDH’s focus moved from concerns about hate groups to monitoring conversations about the coronavirus. In December it produced a booklet entitled The Anti-Vaxx Playbook. In the Introduction, Ahmed states that bad actors on the internet have created “a Digital Counter Enlightenment.”

Digital spaces have been colonised and their unique dynamics exploited by fringe movements that instrumentalise hate and misinformation. These movements are opportunistic, agile and confident in exerting influence and persuading people.

Over time these actors, advocating diverse causes - from anti-feminism to ethnic nationalism to denial of scientific consensus - have formed a Digital Counter Enlightenment. Their trolling, disinformation and skilled advocacy of their causes has resocialised the offline world for the worse.

The CCDH’s “work combines both analysis and active disruption of these networks,” he says.

“CCDH's solutions seek to increase the economic, political and social costs of all parts of the infrastructure - the actors, systems and culture - that support, and often profit from hate and misinformation.”

The document also refers to the most popular antivaxx (or vaccine critical) voices as “super-spreaders.” One of its primary messages to Big Tech is that “deplatforming works” to stop vaccine critical voices from expressing their doubts to others.

The CCDH sent pseudonymous operatives to a private online meeting held by the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC). The meeting included Barbara Loe Fisher, the president of the NVIC; Joseph Mercola; Del BigTree of the Informed Consent Action Network (ICAN); Robert F. Kennedy, Jr of Children’s Health Defence; Sherry Tenpenny; and Andrew Wakefield.

“It was a bit like James Bond infiltrating SPECTRE,” Ahmed said although the conference was open to the public.

The Antivaxx Playbook describes these and others who are concerned about the dangers of vaccines with the epithet “anti-vaxxers” throughout. It uses emotive language, as did Ahmed throughout his meeting with Jay.

The two men were a study in contrasts. The Californian Jay, in a t-shirt, began the meeting with a minute of meditative silence, ringing a bell to indicate the beginning and the end. Ahmed, a Cambridge University graduate in a suit and tie, referred to “blackguards” and spoke apologetically about having taken a Greyhound bus as if doing so were a social solecism. He also insinuated that he became infected with COVID-19 last February at a Klu Klux Klan rally he observed in Portland, saying his team had told him afterwards that such extremists deliberately catch COVID-19 and cough on “target audiences.” He offered no evidence that this is, in fact, how he caught the virus.

Ahmed, a graduate of Cambridge University, referred to the British vaccines as a “great hope”, their discovery “a Herculean achievement” and the governance of the British Government, with evident admiration, “swashbuckling.” But he said that these efforts, and any debate about how best to mitigate the pandemic, have been “undermined” by “misinformation.” He compared the vaccine skeptics at the NVIC to “mid-level marketers” and their missions to “a sales industry”.

Jay (who is white) emphasized his belief that vaccine skeptics, whom he described as “wealthy white people”, were targeting people of color. Ahmed repeated his booklet’s admonitions to Big Tech to deplatform vaccine skeptics, saying that trust in social media is the biggest driver in leading people to distrust vaccines.

Big Tech’s platforms, Ahmed said, “have failed to do their bit against the ‘parallel pandemic’” of vaccine skepticism.

This January, NVIC president Barbara Loe Fisher responded to the CCDH’s booklet with a video statement.

“It contains false and misleading information about the Fifth International Public Conference on Vaccination, which was sponsored by the 39-year old U.S. educational charity the National Vaccine Information Center, and held online in October 2020,” she said.

“Promotion of the CCDH report resulted in the spreading of fake news and misinformation by mainline media outlets in Great Britain and the U.S.”

Fisher decried both the CCDH’s demonization of those who question the safety of vaccines as “malignant actors” and its attempts to silence debate. She also stressed that NVIC is a not-for-profit organization with deeply personal motivations: their vaccine- injured children

“Our not-for-profit charitable organization was established for one reason: we were mothers and fathers of children brain injured by the highly reactive pertussis vaccine in the DPT shot and we wanted a safer pertussis vaccine to replace the one that had hurt our children,” Fisher said.

“That goal was accomplished after 14 years of consumer advocacy when a less reactive acellular pertussis (DTaP) vaccine was licensed for babies in the U.S. in 1996,” she continued.

“We also wanted parents to have access to accurate and full information about the risks and complications of both diseases and vaccines before children are vaccinated, so parents and paediatricians could work together to identify those children who are more susceptible to vaccine reactions and protect their health.”

In the army of the one who wins in all God’s battles

February 15, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) — In these end times, in which the apocalyptic battle between light and darkness is approaching its climax and decision, the unique position of the Blessed Virgin Mary must be recognized throughout the world. The Immaculata is the Victress in all God’s battles. She has appeared on the horizon of our epoch as the great sign of salvation and redemption (cf. Apoc 12:1), because the Lord has so ordained it in His merciful providence.

For the Most High “made Mary Mistress of Heaven and Earth, and raised her to be the Leader of His hosts, the Treasurer of His riches, the Dispenser of His graces, the Instrument of His great miracles, the Redeemer of the human race, the Mediatrix of the elect, the Destroyer of God’s enemies, and the faithful Associate of His glory and His triumphs” [1].

In this regard, St. Louis de Montfort states: “God, then, wants to reveal and glorify Mary, the masterpiece of his hands, in the latter times” [2]. She, the dawn of our redemption, precedes the glorious rising of the Sun of Salvation. Thus, the true devotion to Mary is governed by the famous phrase: Ut adveniat regnum tuum, adveniat regnum Mariæ!

The Immaculata “has brought forth, in union with the Holy Spirit, the greatest that has ever existed and will ever exist, namely, the God-Man. Therefore, she will also bring forth the greatest things when the latter times shall come” [3].

In our days, then, when satan is trying to set himself up as the perceived winner, as he controls the key positions of the anti-church and the world, looking to the Blessed Virgin Mary gives us the true understanding: She will inflict the complete and final defeat on the serpent and all his followers!

“Mary, therefore, more than ever, in her mercy, power and fullness of grace, should be recognized and loved precisely in these latter times […] Finally, Mary should become the terror of the demons and their followers, like an army drawn up in battle array, and precisely in these latter times, because satan knows that he will then have only a little time left to destroy souls, and therefore he will redouble his hostile efforts and attacks day after day” [4].

From this perspective, one understands even better how unique the mission of our Heavenly Queen is in God’s plan of salvation for us human beings, as it is clearly described in the Protoevangelium (cf. Gen 3:15): “Chiefly to be understood from those final cruel attacks of the devil, which multiply from day to day until the reign of the antichrist, is that first and famous prophecy and curse of God, which was already hurled against the serpent in the earthly paradise […] The most terrible and strongest opponent whom God could place against satan is Mary, the Blessed Virgin and Mother of the Redeemer. God gave her already from paradise […] such great power to defeat, overthrow and crush this proud and nefarious spirit that he fears Mary more than all angels and men, yes, in a certain sense even more than God Himself […] That is to say […] that satan, in his pride, suffers infinitely more to be defeated and punished by a lowly and humble handmaid of the Lord than by the Lord Himself, and that her humility is more destructive to him than the omnipotence of God” [5].

St. Louis de Montfort illustrates the exalted position of the victorious Virgin with the following statement: “The power which God has freely willed to grant to Mary is so great that she seems to have the same power as God, and her petitions and prayers are so powerful with God that they are considered commands to Him in spite of His Majesty, who can never resist the supplications of the beloved Mother” [6].

That is why all hell trembles before the Immaculata! She is the invincible Guide of the Heavenly Hosts. St. Alphonsus Liguori says in this regard: “Mary is not merely the Queen of Heaven and the Saints, but also the Mistress of hell and the devils, because she heroically overcame them by her virtues” [7].

The same Doctor of the Church leads us to a firm trust in the true victress: “My children, with these words Mary wants to tell us, when the enemy attacks you, flee to me, look to me and take courage; for in me, your Protectress, you see at the same time your victory […] That is why Mary is called: Fearful to the powers of hell, like a well-ordered army: Terribilis ut castrorum acies ordinata (Cant. 6:3)” [8]. Church Father St. John of Damascus affirms: “If I place in you, O God-bearer, an unconquerable hope, I shall be blessed; I shall overcome my enemies, if only I have your protection and your almighty help alone as my armor” [9].

Against this background, the historical message of Fatima shines even more, where the Blessed Virgin and Mother of God appeared with the announcement of triumph in this apocalyptic decisive struggle. She, the Ark of the New Covenant, offers her children the safe haven: “Jesus wants to establish the devotion to my Immaculate Heart in the world. To those who practice it, I promise salvation” [10].

In this epochal announcement the great plan of Divine Mercy for our time is expressed. The Most High Himself wants people to consecrate themselves to the Immaculate Heart of Mary! And here lies the golden key of salvation history!
For “Mary is the Sanctuary […] of the Most Holy Trinity, where God is more exaltedly present than in any other place in the universe, and more gloriously enthroned than above the cherubim and seraphim. Without a very special privilege, therefore, no creature, however pure, is permitted to enter this Sanctuary” [11].

The Lord responds to the immense need of the apocalyptic end times with the highest measure of His mercy, which wants to come to us in a motherly way, namely through the Mediatrix of all graces. She is the way by which Christ comes — today just like 2000 years ago.

“For all these reasons, God wants Mary to be known, loved and honored, now more than ever, which will undoubtedly happen when the elect, under the grace and illumination of the Holy Spirit, will enter into the practice of perfect and interior devotion to Mary […] The whole fullness of her mercy and the power of her help will be experienced by them in every need, and they will always find refuge in her as a faithful Administrator and Mediatrix” [12].

The Immaculata is the Woman clothed with the sun who confronts the antichristian world power of the dragon [13] and saves all who entrust themselves to her. She, who gave birth to the Author of life, will overcome the culture of death. She can use this mission of hers from God all the better and faster, the more her unique power is recognized and accepted. “Happy, indeed a thousand times happy, are the Christians who even now faithfully and perfectly attach themselves to Mary, regarding her as their sure anchor. In the raging storms of this world they will not perish, nor will they ever lose their heavenly treasures. Happy are those who enter into Mary as into Noah’s Ark! The waters of the Flood, which bury so many people, will not harm them, because: Qui operantur in me non peccabunt (Eccli. 24,30)” [14].

About the lived consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, man will rejoice throughout eternity, because the Heavenly Mother will do everything for him. A child of Mary is never lost! “In this way she also gives herself completely to the one who gives her everything. She drowns him in the abyss of her graces, adorns him with her merits, sustains him with her power, enlightens him with her light, and embraces him with her love; she communicates to him her virtues, her humility, her faith, her purity, etc.; she makes herself his pledge, replaces all his defects and faults, and becomes his one and all with Jesus. In short, whoever has given himself completely to Mary, to him Mary also belongs completely” [15].

She is an exceedingly loving and attentive mother, rich in goodness and powerful to help always and everywhere. She constantly exercises the position entrusted to her by God as Mediatrix of all graces: “This good mother and powerful Princess of Heaven would rather send thousands of angels in haste to the rescue of one of her children that was relying on her than let him succumb to the malice, number and violence of his enemies” [16].

The consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary is the solution to all problems. She deserves all our confidence. St. Maximilian Kolbe testifies: “Dearly beloved! We must often remember that all it takes is a word, a glance, or merely a thought, a turning to the Immaculata. She will then put in order again all that we have destroyed in ourselves, around us and in others. And then she will guide us: the present and also the past” [17]. Therefore, the great Apostle of Mary exclaims: “Love the Mother of God, love the Immaculata, love her! She will make you happy. Trust her, give yourselves totally to her, completely and without limits” [18]. And furthermore, he affirms: “Whoever is truly consecrated to Our Lady reaches out without further ado, wherever he may be, into the hearts of men, even the worst, and saves countless souls” [19].

Sister Lucia emphasized in this sense that God has given the world two ultimate remedies: devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Holy Rosary.[20] The latter is the true chain of victory. This is why the Heavenly Mother appeared at Fatima, where she announced her great triumph as the Queen of the Holy Rosary. Sister Lucia said about this: “The Most Holy Virgin in these last times in which we live has given a new efficacy to the recitation of the Holy Rosary […] There is no problem, I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot resolve by the prayer of the Holy Rosary. With the Holy Rosary, we will save ourselves. We will sanctify ourselves. We will console Our Lord and obtain the salvation of many souls” [21].

The Immaculata is the Intercessory Omnipotence with God, since she is able to do everything with Him. She gives us the Rosary as the decisive weapon of victory. The saints and truly enlightened shepherds have clearly seen and testified to this: “Mary, the Queen of the Rosary, is the Queen of the Universe […] Every good prayer of the Rosary is a piece of spiritual world conquest. A kind of exorcism […] The Rosary, without being something machine-like, is our machine gun! With it we do urgent practical work for the present and the future. Praying the Rosary is war service […] Therefore, together with the rest of Christianity, we will take up the Rosary and trustingly lay our combat program […] at the feet of her who will crush the serpent’s head […] It is today as at the beginning of days. God calls forth the new time we are waiting for from the nothingness of our impotence. Let us pray! Mary be our battle cry! St. Michael our field marshal!” [22]. The Rosary leads us to victory with absolute certainty!

While the evil enemy has gathered for his camp the first, the great and the powerful, our Heavenly Mother does the exact opposite. Pope St. John Paul II, at the beatification of the shepherd children Francisco and Jacinta in Fatima on May 13, 2000, affirmed that according to a Divine plan, the Woman clothed with the sun came from Heaven to seek out the little ones favored by the Father [23].

“The Heavenly Mother, in her Immaculate Heart, immeasurably increases the value of the Rosary prayed by her weak children. She implores for them very effectively from the Lord of Hosts the victorious Divine grace and strength. […] The Rosary prayer of the weak children, imbued with the humility and light of the Woman clothed with the sun, strikes like lightning the arrogance of the infernal powers” [24].

One understands, then, why St. Padre Pio, pointing to the Rosary, said: “Bring me the weapon! Give me the weapon!” [25]. Those who have recognized the surpassing effects of the Rosary understand why we should pray it daily and spread it everywhere. St. Louis de Montfort makes this vividly clear: “The Ave Maria is the most powerful weapon which puts evil spirits to flight, strikes down the enemies of God’s people, destroys error. The Ave Maria fills us with all kinds of graces, gladdens Heaven, renews Mary’s joy, and promotes the glory of the Most Holy Trinity” [26].

St. Bonaventure, a Doctor of the Church, emphasizes how demons tremble at the sublime name of Mary [27], and St. Bernard of Clairvaux, another Doctor of the Church, points out that satan even fears to hear this name pronounced [28]. “Satan escapes, hell quakes when I pray: Ave Maria” [29]. In this light, the faithful and trusting prayer of the Rosary is the most urgent imperative of this historical hour. “And Thomas a Kempis remarks, just as men fall to the earth in terror when lightning strikes near them, so the devils are struck down when they hear the name of Mary mentioned [30]. O what glorious victories the devotees of Mary have won over these enemies by invoking her most holy name” [31].

In this apocalyptic decisive battle, the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary and Victress in all God’s battles, will bring about the greatest triumph of her Immaculate Heart! St. Maximilian Kolbe, the Apostle of the Immaculata, prophetically foretold: “You will one day see the statue of the Immaculata placed on the highest pinnacle of the Kremlin […] Before this will be the case, we must pass a bloody trial” [32].

Lenten penances this year expand beyond atoning for our own sins to those of the world

Reparation for the evils brought about by COVID, civil unrest, election chaos, abortion, and blasphemy is desperately needed.

February 15, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) – The penitential season of Lent is upon us. Catholics customarily observe the season by giving up something. These sacrifices normally involve forgoing habits, foods, and drinks as a way of atoning for our sins. It is a very personal commitment that reflects a desire to reform our lives.

However, this year is not normal. We are told that we must accept “a new normal” that disrupts our habits and life patterns. Everything is upside down, including our Lenten observance.

Adding to the confusion, many changes involve disastrous restrictions on our livelihood and our ability to worship God. Other concerns are anti-Christian laws that loom on the horizon. Our Lenten penance seems so detached from modern life. Thus, many people are discouraged because they sense themselves helpless to stop the dangers that have suddenly invaded our lives.

A need to broaden horizons

This Lent, we should broaden our horizons beyond a personal desire for atonement. We need to find a way to assimilate the tragic events around us with our Lenten observance. If we can do this, it will make our penance more effective and our Lent more sublime.
There is a widespread belief that the evils that have come upon us can be blamed only upon liberals. As conservatives, we cannot understand why we find ourselves in the present state of desolation. We have done much to oppose these evils. However, the triple burden of COVID, civil unrest, and election chaos weigh heavily upon us, despite our many efforts and prayers.

Such an outlook is wrong. We can understand this Lent better if we consider our own faults and how they impact the nation. While liberal causes promote obvious evils like procured abortion, sodomy, and blasphemy, we also participate in many sins that have brought America to its present state of misery. We need to recognize our role and make reparation.

Atoning for these sins this Lent is something positive we might do in the face of our helplessness to change society for the better. As in times of old, such atonement can move God to act in much more effective ways than our own.

The object of penance is the hatred of sin

The Catholic Encyclopedia defines penance as “a supernatural moral virtue whereby the sinner is disposed to hatred of his sin as an offense against God and to a firm purpose of amendment and satisfaction.”

The object of our penance is not sin in general, or even the sins of others but our own. We are accountable for them and should do penance.

Thus, this Lent, we might look at our own sins through the wide-angle lens of what we have done to further the nation’s evils. In this way, we can integrate our penances with what is happening in society. We can then see better the horrors of the world around us and implore God's aid.

The sins for which we must atone

Indeed, America is a sinful nation. We must recognize that even if we grieve for the nation and seek justice, all sin before God and contribute to our nation's iniquity.

We can sin by participating in matters that offend God. This is especially true in our participation in our hypersexualized culture and fashions. We have a role in facilitating impurity and the culpable acceptance of all kinds of sexual aberrations.

We sin by omission by failing to speak out against the outrages that surround us. Many times, we can be silent, lax, or afraid to fight the sinful modern culture that invades family, community and parish.

We can sin by indifference to the blasphemies and offenses against God, His Blessed Mother, and the Church, often by those inside ecclesial structures. We must have zeal for defending Church teaching and God's law in the face of a society that glories in destroying them.

Indeed, we might ask ourselves if we have prayed enough for our decadent nation. We must hate our complicity, weakness, or laziness that allows these sins to continue unopposed.

A balanced look at our iniquities

Thus, such a vision of our participation in the nation's sins should lead us to observe Lent differently. It allows us to see that the true cause of our present misfortunes is not only liberal agendas, but our indifference and iniquities that call down chastisement upon us.
We will then be in the sublime position to call upon God and implore His mercy for the nation. Scripture says: “Be converted, and do penance for all your iniquities: and iniquity shall not be your ruin” (Ezek. 8:30).

It is a balanced position that should not lead us to severe penances that are beyond our strength to fill.

The principal act of penance is not the giving up or sacrifice. It is our hatred of the sins that offend God and our repentance. This heartfelt sorrow is what leads us to do or suffer something as a way of atoning for our sins.

Thus, we might still observe our usual Lenten sacrifices of forgoing habits and nourishment. However, this perspective allows us to offer these same sacrifices to God as atonement born from the hatred of our sins.

Thus, this Lent, we can do something sublime in the face of the great evils we face. There is no reason to be discouraged if we act in this manner. Indeed, this is a central theme of hope found in the Fatima message. History teaches us that God looks favorably on these acts of atonement from humble and contrite hearts. He will come to our aid, influencing events in unimaginable ways.

The media’s quid pro Cuomo

Even after his decision to send infected COVID patients to nursing homes, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo never apologized

February 15, 2021 (Family Research Council) —When New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) won an Emmy for his COVID press briefings back in November, no one knew how ironic the award would turn out to be. Three months later, Americans are finding out just how big of a performance Cuomo gave. A killer one, some would say. Now, knee-deep into a nursing home scandal that liberals are surprisingly silent about, we're learning just how much of an act his concern for New Yorkers really was.

Even after his decision to send infected COVID patients to nursing homes, Cuomo never apologized. The action, which created an uproar on both sides of the aisle, led to a massive outbreak of the virus — and the deaths of more than 13,297 seniors. Thursday, almost a year later, Cuomo aide Melissa DeRosa finally apologized for the move — but not to families. No, her concern was for any political inconvenience. In the bombshell video call with the governor's party, she told Democrats, “I do understand the position that you were put in. I know that it is not fair. It was not our intention to put you in that political position with the Republicans... So we do apologize.”

In one of the more explosive revelations of the meeting, DeRosa admits that there was, in fact, a massive coverup — which, naturally, she blames on Donald Trump. His tweets, she said, that “we killed everyone in nursing homes” panicked the governor's team. Terrified of a DOJ investigation, they hid the numbers — downplaying them by an astonishing 43 percent. “Basically, we froze,” she explained. “We weren't sure... [what] was going to be used against us,” DeRosa told the lawmakers. “That played a very large role into this.” Even Democrats, who took a beating for Cuomo's reckless decision in 2020, didn't seem to be in a forgiving mood. State Assemblyman Ron Kim (D-Queens), whose uncle died of COVID in a New York nursing home, said the apology didn't go far enough. “It's not enough how contrite they are with us,” he said. “They need to show that to the public and the families — and they haven't done that.”

All they cared about, he told reporters later, was “dodg[ing]... any incriminating evidence.” “They had to first make sure that the state was protected against federal investigation.” Kim shook his head. “That's how I understand their reasoning of why they were unable to share, in real time, the data.” Other Democrats, like State Senator Andrew Gounardes, blasted Cuomo, arguing, “This is a betrayal of the public trust. There needs to be full accountability for what happened.”

Not surprisingly, MSNBC and CNN couldn't be bothered to cover the firestorm. Despite all that's happened, Cuomo continues to get a free pass from the press on a decision that would have landed any Republican in jail. Now, the governor is headed to Washington, D.C., where he can personally thank President Biden for burying the case. “All signs point to they are not looking at this,” DeRosa tried to assure Democrats Thursday. “They've dropped it.”

New Yorkers, on the other hand, have not. In a gut-wrenching column for USA Today this week, one of the victim's daughters, Tracey Alvino, accused the governor of running from his part in her dad's death.

“Governor Cuomo called his handling of the coronavirus 'beautiful.' My dad being placed on a ventilator wasn't beautiful. My brother sleeping in the hospital parking lot just so he could be close to Dad wasn't beautiful... Standing by helpless while Dad's organs failed one-by-one, wasn't beautiful... Comforting my grieving mother every single day because she doesn't want dad to be dead isn't beautiful. Hearing Cuomo blame these deaths on God, former President Donald Trump, Mother Nature, the media, the nursing home staff, and arguably even the nursing home patients themselves, wasn't beautiful.”

Cuomo, meanwhile, hasn't exactly helped his cause — lashing out a reporter after a damning report came out of the state's attorney general's office late last month. “Who cares,” he fired back in a fiery press conference. “Who cares [if they] died in the hospital, died in a nursing home? They died.”

From anyone else, his callousness might be shocking. But then again, this is the governor who lit up the Empire State Building in pink to celebrate legal infanticide in New York. Like most radical liberals, his cold disregard for life doesn't end in the womb. It's a war against human dignity that is driven by a utilitarian view of life. “Who cares?” That's all the feeling liberals can muster when it comes to anyone who doesn't add value to their world.

Middle school: Ground zero for indoctrinating America’s children

If at all possible, remove your children from the toxic, corrupting climate of the typical American public middle school.

February 15, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) — Did you know that math supports capitalist and imperialist views, and that teachers need to deconstruct its inherent racism?

This “woke” message from the Oregon Department of Education to the state’s educators is just the latest example of radical instruction in American schools. And some of the worst is found in middle schools.

Middle school is described by many parents as a gauntlet of twisted, dangerous indoctrination emanating from activist teachers, administrators, and school counselors drawn to the 6th to 8th grade age cohort. Why? Because the pubescent child is the ideal subject for ideological manipulation.

I heard recently from a concerned mom, a single Ohio parent raising two daughters. One had just completed 8th grade when her mom described to me the non-stop liberal agenda dominating the climate at her child’s middle school.

The hallways were papered with “LGBT” rainbows and messages pushing “love is love.” School announcements regularly featured perky voices plugging “gay-straight alliance” activities. Diversity, equity, social justice themes popped up everywhere, the mom told me. “My daughter was inundated with constant propaganda.”

Thankfully, her child remained solidly grounded in the truth, so the attempts to win her acceptance had the opposite effect, cementing her position as a determined Christian conservative.

But that isn’t the outcome in many families. Parents regularly report the poisonous fruit of bizarre middle school messages, including screaming matches over dinner with badly informed “tweens.” Parents watch their once-affectionate offspring turn into hard, hostile junior progressives with defiant attitudes, questionable friends, secret activities, falling grades and worse.

Many families suffer in silence, too intimidated to bring their concerns forward. In the wake of COVID shutdowns and remote learning, some have quietly chosen permanent home-schooling. But many are stuck in government schools, silently seething as children are intentionally sold sexual confusion, hatred of America, Marxism, and racial division.

Last fall in two Beavercreek, Ohio, middle schools, sixth graders were given a survey about their “sexual orientation.” Parents were not informed ahead of time. A newly-formed “Allies” club focusing on “LGBTQ” behaviors was also simultaneously being promoted to students, again, without parental knowledge. In Hopewell, Virginia, middle schoolers were asked about these subjects as well as defining terms like marital “affairs,” “boytoys,” and more.

In Oakdale, Louisiana, middle schoolers were asked on a surprise survey at a school-based health clinic if they are “gay, lesbian or bisexual” and had participated in “oral, anal or vaginal sex.” School health clinics, while initially appealing to many communities, end up bypassing parental consent as they dispense contraceptives, refer for abortion, or counsel affirmatively about homosexuality/gender identity issues during the school day.

Of course, obscene discussions of anal, oral and vaginal sex are standard fare in many “comprehensive sex education” classes, even in middle school — lessons that proponents defend as “medically accurate.”

Yeah, right. Sixth graders learning how to safely perform anal sex? In whose universe is this anything but pornographic, dangerous child corruption?

Middle school is the target age for a very controversial sex ed curriculum, developed by Planned Parenthood and called “Get Real.” Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus (Ohio) is partnering with Columbus City Schools to teach this obscene, promiscuity-plugging program paid for by a federal grant. “Get Real,” which focuses on teaching sixth and seventh graders about condoms and anal and oral sex, has been the subject of parent complaints in Cumberland County, North Carolina, and in Spokane, Washington, schools.

In Santa Ana, California, middle school children reported to their parents that their school day had included a school “LGBT” fair where men in “drag” gave make-up lessons. At a Thornton, Colorado, middle school, a career day featured a man in “drag” who goes by the stage name of “Jessica L’Whor.” The school’s explanation? To promote “inclusiveness.”

A school-wide assembly at a middle school in the Dayton, Ohio, area in 2019 took parents by surprise when they learned that, to observe “Coming Out Day,” actor/author Maulik Pancholy had been invited to speak to the whole student body. His entire reason for being there was to promote and normalize a homosexual identity, one that he says he first embraced when he was in 6th grade. He’s written a book about it. Pancholy is a familiar figure to youth since he is one of the voices on the Disney cartoon, “Phineas and Ferb.”

A dad in Cambridge, New York got 1.2 million views on his 2017 post on Facebook as he described his outrage over the school assignment for his 11-year-old son. The boy was to report on “genital reconstruction surgery” using the controversial “Genderbread Person” graphic.

And then there are the numerous complaints nationwide about Islamic indoctrination forced on students, mostly in middle school. In Gerrardstown, West Virginia, 7th grade students were asked to write the Islamic conversion statement, the Shahada, as part of a world religion class. A middle school in Bristol, Connecticut, disinvited a woman scheduled to speak to seventh graders about the “empowerment” of Muslim women after parents complained.

Then there are all the social justice and equity complaints. In Buffalo Public Schools, middle schoolers are told Western justice is “punitive” and teachers convey the idea that “[a]ll white people play a part in perpetuating systemic racism.” In Ames, Iowa, students are being bombarded in February (2021) with a “Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action” which includes promotion of “queer” and “trans” identities to dismantle “heteronormativity” and also lessons in “disrupting the Western prescribed nuclear family structure requirement by supporting each other as extended families and ‘villages’ that collectively care for one another …”

You thought BLM was about race, not sexual deviancy? Perhaps your thinking has been shaped too much by Western civilization.

And to top it all off, middle school libraries are full of obscene, dark, trashy material masquerading as fiction. In Nassau County, Florida, parents were outraged about two books TTFN and TTYL (which stand for “Ta ta for now” and “Talk to you later”). The books include depictions of teen drinking, sexual behavior, and vulgar language.

A New Jersey mom contacted me several years ago to describe the deliberate indoctrination of her uncomplicated, “straight” 13-year-old son and several other middle school boys by a teacher affiliated with GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network. Unbeknownst to parents, the teacher loaned the boys pro-homosexual fiction and helped them set up a private Instagram account focusing on “LGBTQ” discussions. Fast forward to the present with good news. Because the mom caught this activity in time and blew the whistle, her son is back to being a normally-developing teen with zero interest in homosexual matters.

Parents need to be hyper-vigilant during the middle school years and take nothing for granted. If at all possible, remove your children from the toxic, corrupting climate of the typical American public middle school. These schools will educate your children, but it may be a hard lesson in lost innocence and early depravity.

If you’ve been putting off doing something for God every day, Lent is a good time to start

We need to bring the blazing light of reality, the spotlight of truth, to bear on our interior lives.

By Dr. Peter Kwasniewski

February 15, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) — The famous nineteenth-century English bishop William Bernard Ullathorne says: “It belongs to the man who is in quest of his supreme good to draw as near to divine things as his condition of life will allow.”

The purpose of Lent is twofold: first, to do penance for our own sins, as we prepare to celebrate the feast of feasts, Easter; second, and more deeply and lastingly, to re-establish an intimate relationship with God that we tend to let slide at other times. If the Church never called us to take our spiritual obligations more seriously during a specific season each year, all but the rarest of the rare would drift farther and farther away with the passage of time. And indeed, it cannot be denied that the removal of a pre-Lenten period (Septuagesimatide) to gear us up for spiritual warfare and the almost complete abolition of fasting during Lent and abstinence during the rest of the year have produced a situation in which even Lent itself, sadly, does not seem to do much for us.

It would be easier, yes, if the Church still required us to do serious penance during Lent. But we should not and must not hide behind the bad policy decisions of others when we ourselves are free to take steps we know would help us to refocus and recommit. At my personal judgment, God will not ask me why other people failed to do what they could have done, but rather why I failed to do what I could have done. (By the same token, He will be merciful to the sheep who have been misled by the plausible lies of their shepherds, but that is a topic for another time.)

We need to bring the blazing light of reality, the spotlight of truth, to bear on our interior lives. We are so good at deceiving ourselves that it takes considerable courage and resolve to break through the deception and realize who we are (or who we are not) and what we are doing (or not doing).

You and I are Christians when, and only when, we are either communing with our Lord in prayer or doing the kind of work that will, over time, foster and deepen that communion. This is what it means to “love God above all things” and to “seek first the kingdom of God.” Our goal should be, as the Benedictines say, “to pray and to work” — not setting these against each other, but seeing them as a fundamental unity, a building up of the kingdom inside us and outside us. We are builders. We are supposed to build a cathedral within the soul and make it as beautiful a home for the divine Presence as can be. We are also supposed to help make this world, or rather the people of this world, a cathedral for the same divine Presence.

Do we realize that without God, we are nothing? We would not even exist without Him causing us to be at each moment. As Jesus says: “Without me you can do nothing.” Lent is an opportunity to take this truth to heart and let it shape our daily lives, our daily schedules.

The greatest gift God has ever given or will ever give in this world is the Most Holy Eucharist. He gives Himself to us, each and every time the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is offered. While there are situations in which daily Mass attendance is not possible or not feasible — and this is a cause of great sorrow to many devout souls — there are also situations in which attendance would be possible for us, and the problem instead is that we do not organize our time well, or have mixed up priorities, or refuse to acquire the discipline necessary for making it happen more consistently.

As a wise man once said, “no one has ever starved because there wasn’t enough time to eat.” We give time to the things that matter to us, such as eating and sleeping or social media and recreation. What we can’t live without, we find time for. Perhaps there are things we think we can’t live without that are in fact holding us back from living fully the human and divine life for which we were created.

If I were a nonbeliever and I heard that Catholics believe that every day, God literally gives Himself to those who go to Mass, I would have to assume that every Catholic in the world goes every day. I mean, who wouldn’t, if he knew that God would enter into him personally and share His divine life with him?

If we knew that a slightly daft and extravagantly generous rich person would be standing on the corner of Main Street every day at noon handing out $100 bills, we would flock down there to collect the money. Yet what is $100, or even $100 million, compared to sanctifying grace, compared to the gift of eternal life, compared to Jesus Himself? But Christians can pass up Jesus more easily than they would pass up a $100 bill. That should be a source of embarrassment. It should prompt us to ask whether we have graduated yet from the school of materialism in which we, as fallen human beings, were enrolled against our will and have moved into the corporate ranks of believing Christians.

As I admitted a moment ago, daily Mass is not always possible, especially if one is looking for a truly reverent liturgy at which the Lord is worshiped fittingly and received by the faithful on the tongue and kneeling, as is most appropriate. In that case, we need to ask ourselves the same questions about other practices commended by the saints, by which we can unite ourselves to our Eternal High Priest. How about praying some part of the Divine Office, the other public liturgy of the Church? Or praying devoutly at home the prayers of the missal? How about recommitting to the daily rosary, if one has drifted from it? Or the prayerful reading of Sacred Scripture (lectio divina)? Or a daily fast, at least in the form of skipping one meal?

Wise spiritual directors counsel against trying to do too many things or too much at once, but we should do something daily, committing to it calmly and resuming it with determination if we happen to forget it or slip up. The devil tries to discourage us from taking up prayer and penance (“it’s all a waste of time and effort, what good is it anyway?,” etc.), and then, if we do manage to take it up, he waits for us to stumble or fail (“Hah! You see how good your resolutions were! Might as well give up if you can’t do it for forty days straight,” etc.). In the spiritual battle, nothing is more important that calm perseverance.

Lent prompts each of to ask himself: what matters to me in my life? What gives it meaning? What comes first? Maybe we are not sure, or we say one thing and do another, or we falter with inconsistency. God understands our confusion. We are weak, fallen, ignorant, and damaged creatures. Our Holy Mother the Church is urging us to take a chance on making God first, on giving Him more room. He will take over our life if we let Him — and this is the best thing that could ever happen, because He has the goodness, wisdom, and power to be in charge and not to make a mess of things, as we do when we’re left to ourselves.

Dr. Kwasniewski is taking a short break from writing new material for LifeSiteNews while he finishes several books he has agreed to deliver to publishers. We wish him well in these endeavors and look forward to his blog posts resuming in the Easter season.

Porn pioneer Larry Flynt lived to see his filthy fantasies transform his nation

Flynt died, aged 78, after having launched a porn conglomerate in the 1960s that was an even cruder imitation of Hugh Hefner’s Playboy empire: Hustler.

February 15, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) — Larry Flynt, one of the last public American porn kings, died at the age of 78 years old of heart failure at his Hollywood Hills home on Wednesday, February 10. A paraplegic since an assassination attempt in 1978, Flynt’s porn conglomerate had been an even cruder imitation of Hugh Hefner’s Playboy empire — Hustler magazine, Hustler clubs, and several Hustler TV channels, as well as a panoply of other pornographic products. Flynt called himself the “smut peddler who cares,” and throughout his career he poured poison into America’s groundwater in the name of free speech and getting filthy rich.

Flynt ran a string of strip clubs across the American Midwest in the 1960s before launching his Hustler Newsletter in January of 1972, originally a circular about his clubs. Following the model of Playboy without the laughable pretensions of being a gentleman’s magazine, Flynt decided to launch a national porn magazine in July 1974. By November, he was publishing unprecedented pornographic material, including photographs of female genitalia. Over and over again, he ended up in court fighting for the right to publish porn that even Hefner refused to print.

Flynt finally got rich the following year, when he purchased (for $18,000) paparazzi photographs of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis sunbathing and published them in August of 1975, selling over a million copies within several days as he pandered to the worst instincts of the American public and took their money in exchange for smashing taboos and destroying privacy. Flynt was so flush he managed to buy a mansion with the money he made selling flesh. Whether the women who ended up in Hustler wanted Flynt to put their bodies on display for the paying public was of no consequence.

As with Hefner, Flynt’s personal life mirrored the sexual chaos he projected into the culture. He was married five times, was relentlessly and recklessly promiscuous, and claimed to have had his first sexual experience with an animal rather than a person. Nothing was too vile for Flynt, and he was proud of it all. Americans, he claimed, were just like him. “My competitors always masqueraded their pornography as art,” Flynt scornfully said to the Cincinnati Post. “We never had any pretensions about what we did … We have proved that barnyard humour has market appeal.” Those not already in the gutter, he believed, could be coaxed there.

In fact, Flynt furiously disowned his oldest daughter (of five) Tonya Flynt-Vega when she converted to Christianity and announced her opposition to pornography. His daughter eventually claimed in the 1998 book Hustled that her father had sexually abused her. Flynt claimed she was lying and that he’d passed a polygraph test confirming that fact. He himself converted briefly to evangelicalism in 1977 after an encounter with the evangelist Ruth Carter Stapleton (Jimmy Carter’s sister), before relapsing a year later and settling comfortably and conveniently on atheism.

Flynt’s most famous court battle resulted in the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in favor of his First Amendment right to publish a fake Hustler ad of Religious Right spokesman and televangelist Jerry Falwell describing an incestuous encounter between the pastor and his mother in an outhouse. Falwell won a libel suit against the pornographer in a lower court, but the Supreme Court decided in 1988 that the ad constituted parody and was thus protected speech. Flynt, already accustomed to fighting obscenity laws wherever he found them, styled himself a defender of the sort of speech most people were too decent to utter or publish.

Flynt’s empire once boasted a turnover of $150 million, and Hustler peaked at a circulation of three million. He also flooded the American market with other porn magazines and movies. During his lifetime, he represented everything wrong with the sexual revolution and with the metastasizing of libertarianism into libertinism. Everything he accomplished made America worse, and he left broken marriages, debased minds, and a cruder culture in his wake. He was a porn pioneer; with the arrival of the digital tidal wave of filth heralded by the internet that has swamped the culture and conquered nearly every young mind in the nation, his vision for America has become a reality. Unfortunately, Larry Flynt was a profoundly consequential American. He lived to see his filthy fantasies transform his nation, and generations have been confused about the difference between happiness and pleasure as a result.
