* In yesterday’s news on the Supreme Court’s legalization of lap dancing LifeSite noted incorrectly that Louise Arbour is the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada.  While Arbour did present the ruling, the Chief Justice is Justice MacLachlin. Arbour was recently appointed to the Supreme Court, after serving as Head Prosecutor for the UN War Crimes Court.  * Also in last Wednesday’s news LifeSite erroneously reported that donations to support lawyer Charles Ligousi in his bid to overturn the bubble zone law could receive tax receipts from the Christian Heritage Party. Such a policy is under consideration, but […]

CLARIFICATION ON POPE’S CALL FOR END TO DEATH PENALTY

VATICAN CITY, Dec 15 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Media reports covering statements made by Pope John Paul II Sunday with regard to the death penalty failed for the most part to mention an essential proviso to his call for abolition of the death penalty. The official Vatican Information Service noted that, while the pope did renew his “appeal to all leaders to reach an international consensus to abolish the death penalty”, he based this position on the view that “the cases of absolute necessity for executing malefactors are by now so rare, if not practically non-existent.”  The Catechism of the Catholic Church […]

OTTAWA, Dec 14 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Canada’s new Supreme Court justice, Louise Arbour, former head of the United Nations World Court in the Hague, along with two of her colleagues, ruled yesterday that sexual touching (lap dancing) in strip bars is legal. AP reports that while the policy is in effect in 5 states, most members of the country’s parliament jeered the suggestion Monday. (Washington Post) Homosexualist and Aids activists gathered Sunday outside New York’s St. Patrick Cathedral to commemorate […]

FEDERAL LEVY ON AUDIO RECORDING MATERIAL BEGINS JAN. 2000

OTTAWA, Dec 13 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Last year the federal government passed Bill C-32 which authorized a levy on all audio recording material to compensate the music industry for lost revenue caused by illegal copying. The Bill became law Jan. 1, 1999 but was not implemented then because of public protest received during the fall of 1998.  Charitable, non-profit and church organizations, many businesses and others that heavily use blank audio cassettes and CDs for their own purposes, completely separate from the commercial music industry, strongly objected to the levies. The initial rates proposed would have greatly increased the cost of […]
